What happens when we're confronted with data or information questioning our existing set of beliefs? Author David McRaney writes in his book, 'The Backfire Effect' that once we believe something we instinctively and unconsciously protect it: "Just as confirmation bias shields you when you actively seek information, the backfire effect 'defends' you when the information seeks you." NPR story this morning mentioned that kids these days (yes, that just happened) use social media about 9 hours a day and that 2/3 of them view it as necessary to their lives (versus 1/3 who engage because they enjoyed it). Is Facebook now just a part of our social fabric?
