East Africa Emerges as U.S. Visa Gatekeeper
The United States has unveiled a dramatic cutback in its African visa operations, slashing nearly 50 embassies down to just 20 regional hubs. The restructuring, effective June 2026, means millions of Africans will now face longer journeys and higher costs to secure entry into America.

What stands out is the dominance of East Africa in the new map. Nairobi (Kenya), Kampala (Uganda), Kigali (Rwanda), Dar es Salaam (Tanzania), Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), and Djibouti all made the cut — giving the region six hubs, more than any other part of the continent.

By contrast, vast swathes of Central and Southern Africa were left with only a handful of centers, raising concerns of unequal access. Countries without hubs must now rely on neighbors, a move critics say risks sidelining smaller nations and straining regional ties.

U.S. officials frame the decision as part of a broader immigration crackdown, aimed at tightening visa issuance and addressing overstays. But African observers warn the policy could undermine student exchanges, business travel, and tourism, while reinforcing perceptions of diplomatic imbalance.
