On Saturday, January 5th, my friend who is African-American and I visited the store. She mentioned a middle-aged dishwater-blonde clerk with acne scars and wearing glasses was making her feel uncomfortable. My friend had approached the clerk for some help and got a very cool reception. We gathered some things to buy and just to test the waters, said very clearly within the clerk’s range of hearing that we wondered where a particular item was. I know she heard us because as she was pointedly ignoring us, a older man stood next to her and her entire demeanor changed. She smiled warmly and enthusiastically asked the man if he needed help whereas my friend just got a cold and distant response. The racism was subtle, but obvious enough that we sat our merchandise down on the counter and left.

As the Operations Manager of the Seaside Outlets, the staff and ownership respect the right of every individual to form, hold and express their opinions on every topic be it political, religious, moral, etc. However, we also strongly believe there are appropriate ways and places to do so.

The page of a business, we don't feel, is this place. The purpose of our social media is to promote our tenants and their business allowing them to achieve the highest level of success they can. We have never allowed this page to be used to advance the personal ideologies of ourselves or our employees and therefore, don't feel it's necessary to allow it to be used for a public debate.

Therefore, with those principles in mind, I have decided to delete the thread that addressed the concerns of some community member's regarding the recent truck show and one of their members flag display. I will continue to delete any other posts that do not adhere to the intended purpose of this page. We do however encourage you to continue your discussion in a non-threatening and respectful manner on your personal FB pages or the pages of the groups involved.

Rest assured, we will not in the future, remove any posts we receive addressing concerns or questions directed to the Seaside Outlet or tenants, provided said posts adhere to the intended goal of this page.

Lastly, I would like to mention, Sunday's event was intended to be a fundraiser for Doernbecher Children's Hospital and raised over $2000. This is why we supported the event, because it fit perfectly with our mission to aid the local community, school and humanitarian groups in our area. We have been working hard to be a benefit to this community through our financial contributions, giving of our time, and offering our property free of charge for groups and organizations that want or need help with their fundraising efforts. Our involvement has been going on for the 20+ years we have had a home in Seaside and we have been able to contribute to dozens of local groups such as: Oregon State Police, ARC, Clatsop County Food Bank, Clatsop County high school sports and scholarship programs, CASA, The Fallen Badge Foundation, Assistance League of Clatsop/Columbia County, Boy Scout Troops, FFA Groups, Kiwanis, Toys for Tot's, 2 theater groups, over 40 local families directly with monetary and gifts through our Holiday "Adopted Family" program. This is just a sample of where and how we try to help. These contributions have always been made with the goal of non-discrimination, goodwill and social consciousness in mind and without incident until yesterday.

We would like to thank all of our supporters, employees, families and friends for your patronage, assistance and service. The Seaside Outlets will continue to strive to be a productive valued member of our community all the while offering our visitors, residents, and customers a safe and valuable shopping experience.
