Just before the shutdown there was a felony sentencing hearing for a client of mine. The courthouse was closed and the hearing was rescheduled. The prison system anywhere is the worst place to be during the pandemic. Social distancing in an overcrowded prison system is nonexistent. In my opinion the horror stories we have all heard about 26th and California are true. Many years ago I had to petition the Court to have the "Warden" of a prison held in contempt of Court for witholding absolutely necessary medication for a client. It took a Court Order for the lifesaving medication to be provided. The various prisons in Ilinois are now reducing the sentences of people who are not a "danger to the comunity" lest a sentence for a minor offense become a death sentence. I have visited clients in all of the local counties and even for attorneys, being there for an hour it is an eerie feeling when the doors clang behind you. If you know someone that is locked up pay attention to their care.
