Ireland, from ancient times to today 'LΓ‘ Bealtaine' (May Day) has been marked and celebrated in both large and small ways.
LΓ‘ Bealtaine is mentioned in some of the earliest Irish literature and it is associated with important events in Irish mythology. One of four major festivals: Samhain (~1 November), Imbolc (~1 February), Beltane (~1 May) and Lughnasadh (~1 August). Bealtaine is considered to be one of the two more important ones, the other being November's Samhain. It marks the beginning of summer and, traditionally, was when cattle were driven out to the summer pastures. Rituals were performed to protect the crops, the people and the livestock, and to encourage growth. Special bonfires were kindled, and their flames, smoke and ashes were thought to have protective powers, after which all household fires would be doused and then re-lit from the Bealtaine bonfire.
These gatherings would be accompanied by a feast, and some of the food and drink would be offered to the aos sΓ (faeries). Doors, windows, byres and the cattle themselves would be decorated with yellow May flowers.
In parts of Ireland, people would make a May Bush, which is a wonderfully fragrant, flowering hawthorn, decorated with flowers, ribbons and bright shells. Holy wells were also visited, and the 'Bealtaine dew' was thought to bring beauty and maintain youthfulness.
(I'm gonna roll around in it like a mad pagan :-O )
Bealtaine celebrations had largely died out by the mid-20th century here in Ireland, but some of its customs continued and in some places it has been revived as a cultural event.
As a child my Grandmother used to send me out at this time of the year to find wild primroses, "make it a big bunch" she'd say "I want to share some with the faeries"
If you would like to mark the occasion yourself you can pop out and gather a bunch of wild flowers and place them on or around your door (one or two would do), a small gesture of who you are, where you've come from and a nod to those who have gone before us.
There are many more customs tied to this festival and a quick search should throw up some wonderful blogs.
So wherever you are in the world, consider making this a part of your family tradition and help to keep our wonderful culture alive.
SlΓ‘inte ... Good health to you.
May the seasons be kind to us all :)
