TRUTH Act Forum

Tonight, the Board of Supervisors will be hosting a public forum on the TRUTH Act. The TRUTH Act requires an annual public meeting to discuss law enforcement’s cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

The Sheriff’s Office does not participate in immigration enforcement. Our policy is narrow and more restrictive than the California Values Act and most Sheriff’s Offices in California. It focuses on individuals convicted of serious or violent felonies as defined by California law.

In 2025:
• 69 individuals’ information shared with ICE
• 20 ICE arrests in our facility
• Those 69 individuals were booked over 600 times in Sonoma County alone

We recognize that immigration policy is deeply personal for many members of our community, and we remain committed to open dialogue and clear communication about our role and responsibilities. The Sheriff’s Office’s number one priority has been, and will always be, public safety.

Injured Hiker Safely Rescued from Taylor Mountain Regional Park

On Sunday, May 10, at approximately 4:01 p.m., Henry-1 was requested to help locate an injured hiker at Taylor Mountain Regional Park. Regional Parks rangers and Regional Parks deputies heard the call come out over the radio and responded to help. The Henry-1 crew successfully located the hiker along the Todd Creek Trail and relayed the location to responding personnel on the ground.

Crews from Medic Ambulance arrived and provided patient care until a Regional Parks Unit deputy and a Regional Parks ranger were able to drive a vehicle up the trail and park close enough to safely load the patient. The hiker was then transported down the trail to a waiting ambulance in the parking lot.

This response highlights the strong partnership between the Sheriff’s Office, Henry-1, Medic Ambulance, and Sonoma County Regional Parks staff. Working together allowed crews to quickly locate, treat, and safely transport the injured hiker from a difficult-to-access area.

Sonoma County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of an armed individual discharging a firearm at the SMART train platform on Airport Boulevard in Larkfield.

On 4/29/26 at about 10:40 a.m., Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received a 9-1-1 call reporting a subject firing a gun from the platform. Deputies arrived on scene within two minutes, quickly securing the area and establishing a perimeter to ensure public safety. A Nixle was promptly sent out for people to stay out of the area during the police activity.

A subsequent search revealed the suspect was in possession of an airsoft G***k replica handgun concealed in his waistband.

The suspect was identified as a 17-year-old juvenile from Sonoma County who is currently on active probation out of another Bay Area county. Due to his age, his identity will not be released.
He was booked into Sonoma County Juvenile Hall on the following charges:

• Sonoma County Ordinance 19A – Illegal discharge of a small arms device

• California Penal Code § 369i(a)(1) – Disrupting train operations

Detective Sergeant Ed Wilkinson
End of Watch: April 17, 1977

Detective Sergeant Edward Francis Wilkinson was killed on April 17, 1977, while piloting the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office helicopter, “Angel 1.” Sergeant Wilkinson was returning to the helicopter hangar at the Sonoma County Airport after searching for a missing nine year old girl when the helicopter ran out of fuel and crashed into a field on Barnes Road, approximately one half mile south of River Road.

Also injured in the 4:30 p.m. crash was helicopter observer Reserve Deputy Gloria Baxter. Sergeant Wilkinson was severely injured and succumbed to his injuries later that night. Reserve Deputy Baxter suffered major injuries but ultimately recovered.

Sergeant Wilkinson started the Department’s helicopter program and served as its first pilot. That program remains in operation today and has been credited with saving countless lives through search and rescue, law enforcement, and medical air ambulance services.

The Wilkinson Valor Award was created in Sergeant Wilkinson’s memory to honor fellow officers for acts of heroism and courage above and beyond the call of duty.

Sergeant Wilkinson was a 17 year veteran of the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department. His ashes were scattered at sea.

We honor and remember his sacrifice and enduring legacy.
