Welcome to spring!

Awakening of Insects or Jīng Zhé (Chinese: 惊蛰) is the third of the 24 traditional Chinese solar terms. Beginning on March 5, the period ends on March 20 with the Spring Equinox. The third node of Spring, you may have already noticed flowers beginning to bloom, birds singing, and insects buzzing, ushering in springtime in its fullness. It is also traditionally the time for spring farming in agricultural communities across China.

During this period, Daylight Saving Time will start in the US, on March 14, 2021.

Here are some useful health cultivation tips for Jīng Zhé (Awakening of Insects):
1. Consume warming foods to protect the Yang qi, such as leeks and scallions. If you are so disposed, a little alcohol is appropriate at this time of year, with its warming and acrid characteristics.

2. Eating pears during the Awakening of Insects is a custom in many parts of China. As the weather grows warmer and dryer, a sweet, juicy, cooling pear can moisten the lungs and relieve cough symptoms.

3. Start to engage in more gentle exercise, especially in the morning. The second chapter of the Neijing Su Wen, “The Art of Life Through the Four Seasons”, advises us in spring to "arise early also and go walking in order to absorb the fresh, invigorating energy."

4. Avoid unnecessary stress and strain. As anger is associated with the wood phase, and thus spring, try to find time for quiet contemplative practices to ensure qi is circulating smoothly.

Hello my friends! Here is an update on my schedule for acupuncture and herbal medicine for the coming week of 3/16/20-3/21/20:

- In an effort to promote distancing in our regularly busy office, I will be seeing patients in the office at OFF hours. Morning appointments will be at 7am and 8am and evening appointments will be from 5pm-8pm. This will lessen the risk of infection for both me and the patient.

- I am doing house calls at a discounted rate for those who do not want to leave the comforts of your home! Message me for rates and availability.

- Herbal consultations via skype/whats app available for those who are already sick, or those who just want to boost their immune system and don't want to leave home. Herbs will be formulated and sent directly to your home via USPS.

As always, if you are feeling ill with any symptoms, no matter how mild, or have been in contact with a person who is sick, please stay home. Feel free to give me a call and we can get you set up with herbs and what your next steps should be!

Thanks everyone! Stay healthy

Sugar, High-Fructose Corn Syrup, & Importance of Fiber - Dr Rhonda Patrick

Generally I find Joe Rogan to be a bit verbose, but I am falling in love with this guest Dr. Rhonda Patrick! She is a science based nutritional expert who really knows her stuff. This 21 day purification aims to rid the body of heavy metals, environmental pollutants, chemicals, and waste products produced by an overburden digestive system. I will be offering this program to my patients starting 8/21/17! Stay tuned for details! The beer is not part of the cleanse, we drank those yesterday ;). Beer today, cleanse tomorrow!

Decocting herbal medicine

Sometimes the best way to take your herbs is to cook them into a decoction. It's literally like brewing magic potions! This decoction is a mixture of Chan Tui (Cicada molting) and Pang di Hai (Sterculia Seed) for sore and hoarse throat. Got to keep Brian Monk's throat and voice in shape! The moltings and seeds are discarding after cooking, and you are left with an earthy tea that is to be drunk 2-3 times a day. Don't worry, most of my patients get their herbs in powder form. It increases compliance rates significantly ;)
