My client sat in a chair next to the paddock, arms crossed, body tight.
āIām not really emotional,ā she said. āI donāt cry.ā
I nodded and invited her to sit down. To breathe. No pressure.
Fallan was standing quietly across the round pen reading her energy.
As my clientās breath began to slow, Fallan started to walk over, slowly, softly, and stood right beside her.
No pushing. No demand. Just presence.
And then my client let out the tiniest exhale, her eyes filled with tears.
āI didnāt think I needed this,ā she whispered. āBut I do.ā

A client stood silently in the round pen, shoulders tight, eyes brimming, like she was holding back a lifetime of grief.
I invited her to breathe, gently guiding her to ground into her body.
Then Fancy, one of the horses I partner with in my coaching work, looked up and walked over.

You might be an empathā¦but that doesnāt mean your energy has to be on-call 24/7.
Here are 3 signs youāre absorbing emotions that arenāt yours:
1ļøā£ You feel drained after even normal conversations.
2ļøā£ You suddenly feel sad or anxious, but canāt trace where itās coming from.
3ļøā£ You have a hard time knowing whatās yours and what belongs to someone else.
This isnāt because youāre too sensitive.
Itās because your nervous system learned that merging was the safest way to stay connected.
Fancy, one of my horses, taught me a different way.

Just by being near her, I started to feel:

I can stay with myself and still offer presence.

You can support others without absorbing their pain.
Your empathy is a gift, but itās not meant to come at the cost of your well-being.
