Dia de los Mu***os (Day of The Dead) is approaching. How will you be honoring your ancestors?
ℹ️ Day of The Dead ceramics by Irene Aguilar at Pasqual’s Gallery
Irene Aguilar, third daughter of Isaura and Jesus, is known for her vivacious and imaginative spirit throughout her work. She is known for her individual ceramic pieces such as musicians, devils, monks, “women of the night”, “Catrinas” -elegantly dressed female figures for Day of the Dead, and “Fruteros”- fruit bowls on the lips of which sit ain array of figures including lovers, the Three Kings and “Mu***os” -skeleton figures engaged in human activities. In addition, she creates spectacular larger works, such as complex market scenes and flower stands with multiple parts.

Today is National Food Day! A day all about making an effort to eat more whole, real foods, such as fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains and natural proteins. Our mission and vision for several decades has included just that - serving the most delicious, highest quality, organic ingredients in a friendly atmosphere.

TABOO - DEBORAH BENIOFF FRIEDMAN
Deborah Benioff Friedman works with a variety of materials, mostly repurposed, but has a particular affinity for rusty metal and used paper such as teabags, book pages, ledgers, paper bags, and all kinds of envelopes. From these materials she creates abstract compositions, both two- and three-dimensional. The pieces she makes reflect her attachment to objects warmed with the luster of human use.
See her work in our current show, Stitches In Time - Karen Hampton and Deborah Benioff Friedman.

“Karen Hampton listens to her ancestors. “They are all sitting around me. They poke me and they tell me, ‘Go do this. Go do that. You need to tell our story.’” - American Craft Magazine, Fall 2022

ℹ️ The Gaze, Karen Hampton

“Until visiting Café Pasqual’s, I never really liked mole, but I knew that I had never had really good mole. Now I can truly say that really good mole is out of this world. When I tasted it, I was immediately wowed, and then as the flavors lingered on my palate, I could detect the complexity and savor each layer of its sweetness, of its spiciness, and on and on.” ~ Celia Cheng, ‘Cravings’

PATRIARCH - KAREN HAMPTON
“‘Patriarch’ challenges conventional narratives of the abusive white male and the submissive house slave and directs us to look at an inter-racial couple and their children living openly in Florida under the Spanish flag.” - from ‘A Textile Artist’s Historical and Anthropological Mission, IRAAA’. ILIAD - DEBORAH BENIOFF FRIEDMAN
“In my veterinary practice, I was an eye surgeon and, therefore, am adept at microsurgery, tiny sutures under a microscope. And all of this finds its way into the colors and textures I am drawn to, the pieces I make, the way I work.” ~ Deborah Benioff Friedman

1914 - KAREN HAMPTON

WAY DOWN - DEBORAH BENIOFF FRIEDMAN
at Pasqual’s Gallery exhibition “Stitches In Time - Karen Hampton and Deborah Benioff Friedman
“What do I want to make? Objects with a sense of history, of strata, of “wear and tear.” I enjoy following my intuition rather than a plan, keeping open to the mysteries right in front of me or hidden under the surface. Archaeology, paleontology, geology, genealogy, and the unconscious: all are big influences, as is poetry. Anything with layers, with an “underneath,” or with a vein of ore tunneling through.” - Deborah Benioff Friedman

Karen Hampton, Passport #2
Meet the artists, tonight, October 7th at our Opening Reception from 4-7pm for Stitches In Time - Karen Hampton and Deborah Benioff Friedman. Learn more about Karen here: https://youtu.be/XXlzxA4KqE8
“As an artist of color, I have made a life long commitment to creating artwork that responds to the lives of my ancestors. My lens is anthropology and I study my own genealogy. I travel in my ancestors footsteps, I walk the roads where they lived, explored the plantations where they were enslaved, I am the storyteller. As their medium I provide a vehicle for my ancestor’s spirits to transcend history and remain as historical memory. My medium is cloth -- whether digitally printed, hand woven or aged linens -- pieces are imbued with the hopes and visions of African American lives, telling their stories from a maternal perspective.” - Karen Hampton
