Are you or a young adult you know have an IEP? Do you struggle knowing how to have your voice heard in the meeting? Come hear from students who have been successfully involved in self-directed IEPs. Since 2014, students from Mitchell High School have been successfully leading their own IEP meetings. As a result of their success, the Mitchell student advocates have had opportunities to share their experiences through presentations at a local University, state and national conferences, and to parent and community advocacy and support organizations. Over time, they have taken on the name “Mitchell Inspiration,” because that is what they do. They inspire! They show us that it does not matter what a student’s ability level is or what label they have been assigned, EVERY student has a voice and should be involved in making decisions for themselves.

Please call or email the governor to support SB 317. The governor has until Friday (this Friday the 9th, tomorrow!) to sign this bill. It would be a huge, gigantic, big deal for families trying to pay for ABA and other autism-related services. The "cost share" for families can reach as high as $70,000 a year. This bill will potentially bring those costs to ZERO. Please, please, take a moment to tell the governor to sign this bill. Thank you so much!

If you delayed routine medical checkups for your young child during the COVID-19 pandemic, call to schedule a doctor’s appointment.
At a well-child visit, the doctor:
o Tracks your child’s growth and development including milestones, social behaviors, and learning
o Discusses any concerns about your child’s health
o Identifies vaccinations your child needs to protect against illnesses like measles and whooping cough (pertussis) and 12 other serious diseases

Get a Draft IEP Before Your Next Meeting
So, I have had 5 IEPs in the past three weeks. The IEPs averaged 2-5 hours. Argh!!! This video talks about getting a draft of the IEP and evaluations ahead of time as a way to use the time at an IEP wisely. Great info! Also, remember that all of the documentation should be in your primary language so you can understand what is being presented so you can be an equal IEP team member. Great pointers!
1. request drafts - in writing
2. Request drafts when you receive the invite
3. If they cannot provide it before the meeting, ask them if they need to schedule the meeting for a later date so they can get the draft to you.
4. If they will not provide it at all, let them know that the first meeting will be an information-sharing meeting so that you have the information you need to be an equal IEP team member.
