Many of ZZ's paintings traveled to places that we've never been. This "Storm Triptych" was part of the exhibition at Embassy Tallinn in Estonia in 2013. Ambassador Levine sent us a lovely invitation. How I wish we had visited!
The triptych was inspired by various trips to New Mexico, especially the area near Taos and Santa Fe. It's currently available at Blue Rain Gallery. Please share and see it in person when you are in Santa Fe. (No need to fly to Estonia now.🙂)

Daniel Friday has lived in the Northwest his whole life, a shining product of the studio glass movement. Friday has cultivated his artistic vision with strong influence from his indigenous roots in the Pacific Northwest. Craft, form and idea drive Dan's work from conception to object. The past two decades working with artists such as Dale Chihuly and Paul Marioni have given Daniel tools and inspiration to develop craft and produce his art. He feels fortunate to have experienced the rich diversity of Seattle for his skill development. Currently Dan's work is in collections around the world.

“This series may bring about imagery of natural crystals, something that might have been dug up from nature. But then I expanded it and realized that the pieces really talk to one another and began to also read like landscapes, whether a futuristic cityscape or the Blue Ridge Mountains. The individual elements can be rearranged to create a new visual conversation.”

Jim Vogel: Weaving Family, Art, and New Mexican Folklore

"Based out of Dixon, a picturesque village in northern New Mexico, Vogel's artistic journey is a testament to his deep connection to the land, the culture, and the common man's struggle. With a brush in hand and a vision in his heart, Vogel brings to life the rich tapestry of this region through his evocative artwork."

Blue Rain Gallery is pleased to announce an upcoming show of new paintings by Jim Vogel titled “Fabulórico.”

Jim Vogel is one of Blue Rain Gallery’s most celebrated artists. His work connects viewers with the culture of Northern New Mexico, one that is alive and well in rural parts of the state, where time slows down. He is a storyteller at his core, and his bold compositions evoke elements of Depression Era painting, but they are deeply grounded in present day life.

In this new series of work Vogel employs the use of 3D elements that break out of the picture plane or frame. He has experimented with this technique a little in the past, but it is more prevalent in this series. He loves the surprise and playfulness of the subject escaping its confines. This approach also affords Vogel an opportunity to sharpen his carving skills (as well as his carving tools).

The magic and alluring narrative from Jody Naranjo's clay pottery comes alive in her three-dimensional bronze figurines. Each animal has a distinct and exuberant personality that is further embellished by an array of appealing patinas and textures. These eager-eyed statuettes clearly represent the attitude inherent in Naranjo's own personality and approach to art-making: just have fun!

Artist Demonstration: Friday, September 15th from 5 - 7pm

Jody Naranjo’s pots are immediately recognizable – her hand-crafted vessels feature striking shapes and combine Native symbols with graphic simplicity. Her work is steeped in ancestry and legacy, and today she proudly carries on her heritage with a creative twist. Since the age of four, Naranjo has been working with clay at her ancestral homeland and birthplace, the Santa Clara Pueblo in New Mexico. It was here she learned the traditional methods of collecting and processing clay, hand-coiling forms, sgraffito carving, and firing pots under the mentorship of her mother Dolly Naranjo, grandmother Rose Naranjo, and aunts Nora Naranjo-Morse and Jody Folwell. Naranjo began attending the Santa Fe Indian Market with her family at the age of eight and has kept her same booth there ever since. Her signature cartoonish motifs were initially included in her work because of her three young daughters, but Naranjo soon discovered that the fun graphics appealed to more than just children. Naranjo and collectors alike appreciate these cheerful, artfully simple designs because they are worth smiling about. Her designs often include the animals, people, nature, and Pueblo scenes iconic to New Mexico. Her unique, upbeat and innovative art has earned her many first-prize ribbons and a loyal following of fans and collectors around the world.

Join us in Santa Fe next week for a painting demo, artist talk, and opening reception of new works by Roseta Santiago

Painting Demonstration
Thursday, September 14th from 11 am - 4 pm

Guadalupe Street Feature
Artist Talk and Opening Reception: Friday, September 15th from 4 - 7pm

The compelling paintings of Roseta Santiago arise from a vivid dream world. Her art is a gateway into the hearts of her subjects and a conduit for expressing the artist’s emotional contemplation of the world around her.

Following a successful career in commercial design, which funded her move to Santa Fe and allowed her to devote long, intense hours to developing her skills as a fine art painter, Santiago has risen to become one of America’s leading contemporary artists.

Faces inspire Santiago and are often the foundation for a new painting. “I always know when I see a face whether or not I want to paint it,” she says. “It’s not necessarily classic ideas of beauty that draw me—often it is something arresting, unique, a suggested revelatory character that shines through that I want to capture.”

Simplicity and beauty combine fluidly in the sculpture of Bruce LaFountain. Bruce has created a body of work that has redefined the concept of typical Native American sculpture.
Raised on the Turtle Mountain Reservation, Bruces unique ancestry is Chippewa, French and Cree. This heritage is reflected in his sculpture through his use of the warrior image and animal motifs. Bruce draws from his Native American heritage to bring life experiences to completion through sculpture.

Today, Bruce LaFountain is considered to be one of the masters of modern contemporary sculpture. Bruces work can be found in museums, galleries and private collections throughout the country, including the Smithsonian.

Every piece of pottery by Russell Sanchez displays a distinctive flair. He learned the techniques of traditional San Ildefonso Pueblo pottery making from his aunt, renowned potter Rose Gonzales. San Idelfonso is known for it's black on black pottery, but Sanchez has created his own individual style by continually exploring new colors, shapes and designs. Often he embeds native materials such as strands of turquoise or Heishi Shell beads and larger turquoise stones in the clay, or created borders of copper, gold or silver leaf to outline medallions featuring carved figures. He recently won SWAIA’s 2022 Santa Fe Indian Market Best of Show.

Kathryn Stedham: “Spirit of the West” will be on exhibition at Blue Rain Gallery Santa Fe through September 9th

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Kathryn’s artist reception this past Friday.

In a series of landscape paintings contained only by the limits of the canvas, Stedham seeks to project an image of the Southwest that is both enduring and true. She feels a strong desire to be in the Southwest, absorbing all that the landscape has to offer.

Sean Diediker’s sweeping, faceted brushstrokes and painterly surfaces generate works that reveal the artist's sensitivity to his medium and attention to the act of painting itself. Diediker assembles bold colors, chiaroscuro and a cutting-edge sense of design to create a highly original body of work that separates him from his contemporaries.

What the viewer is brought closer to are portraits, still-lives, landscapes and combinations of these forms that are balanced and timeless. All of Diediker's works are tied together by their solid sense of form and compositional structure. Whatever he paints, the same expressive vision and reaction to subject and medium are present. "I enjoy the whole creative process, taking an idea and constructing a painting around it," states Diediker, whose father is a general contractor, "I feel I paint much in the same way that my father would erect a building. Much thought in planning, careful design, step by step and layer upon layer, until the work is done and standing on its own."

Introducing Ross Richmond

For the majority of his career, Ross Richmond's sculptures have focused mainly on the figure, capturing a moment, a gesture, a quiet interaction between people or an individual and their thoughts. Animals have also played an important role in his work, either being included along with the figurative pieces referencing humans relationship with the natural world, or more recently the animal as stand alone pieces highlighting the forms of these natural and elegant creatures portraying them in an almost human manner.

Ross has been working with glass since 1991, where he took his first glass class while studying to be an illustrator at the Cleveland Institute of Art, graduating with a BFA majoring in Glass with a minor in small metals (jewelry) in 1994. Ross began working with the glass master William Morris in 1997 and worked alongside him until his retirement in 2007.

During his career Ross has worked with and for some of the greatest glass and non glass artists, including William Morris, Jane Rosen, Preston Singletary and Dale Chihuly, who have all been mentors and inspirations throughout his artistic journey.

Opening this Friday at Blue Rain Gallery Durango ~ Select works by Rimi Yang

Rimi Yang: First Friday Feature
Opening Reception: Friday, September 1st from 5 - 7pm

Korean-American artist Rimi Yang was born and raised in Osaka, Japan. She moved to the United States in 1986 and shortly after, settled in California where she continues to live and work today. In addition to having exhibited wide ly across the US and Canada throughout her career, the artist has recently been shown in Copenhagen, Stockholm, Dublin and England.

Yang’s paintings -mostly figurative, but with a playful approach to abstraction- reveal an intuitive, contrast-rich take on Eastern and Western art history. It is as though they are struggling to make sense of dualities which simultaneously inspire and confuse us in their attempts to structure the world. Pleasantly suspended between familiar polarities like east-west, male-female, high-low and old-new, the viewer can’t help but be moved by the artist’s apparent search for meaning.

Moving to the West in 2005 was a life-changing event that brought Kathryn Stedham face-to-face with a true calling: painting the infinite spaces of the American Southwest. Little did she realize at the time, that this would combine two personal rudiments: painting and contemplation. Forever fascinated with stories about the West and Westward Expansion she explains, “I would happily board a time machine, if there were such a thing, to experience first-hand this important period in American history and our connection to the land.”
