Tico's Herb Corner

Tico's Herb Corner

I wish we could skip today or maybe I wish we could go back in time. Either way, your absence has turned our lives upside down. We are all trying to do ok but it's really hard without you here. I know you are watching over us everyday and I promise we are all trying to make you proud. I love you and miss you more than words can say and so does your best friend. Even though he won't say much I know today is going to be just as hard for him. We won't be able to be together today as family because of stupid Covid but you will be on every single one of our minds. Love you Lots!!

This is what I shared at Tico's memorial. I cannot explain what it took for me to stand up in front of so many people and read this (without crying) This was Tico's life with us and as you read you will see how truly blessed we were to have this amazing man in our lives (It's a long read and some of you may need some Kleenex):

Tico came into our lives in late 1985, well actually back into our lives, as he was a family friend for many years. As a matter of fact, my aunt Dorothy and Uncle Danny baptized Alejandra. When we were looking through our pictures, I saw one of him at our house on Barela Lane back in the 70’s. Being back in our lives, he had no idea that along with my mom came a lifetime of stress and so many amazing memories. When Tico married my mom on June 28, 1986 his family of two became a family of seven and over the 33 ½ years he shared with us it became a family of 24.

Tico’s daycare AKA Tico’s Health Food shop, where he raised his grandchildren, started on June 1, 1986 when Tico and my mom bought the shop from Karen & Phil Baca. I say daycare, because those of you who shopped with him know that until the day he closed he usually had at least one grandchild with him at the shop. A lot of times he had two or three. Nicholette and Mario’s daycare was at the shop at the DeVargas Mall. Marcos and Audi’s daycare was at the shop on St. Michaels Drive. Jordan and Ayana also spent some time there as well, but along with Alayna their daycare was at the shop on Cielo Court and when Andre, Aurelia, Angelina and Reiana were here visiting from Florida it became a summer camp, until Tico’s Daycare closed in September 2015.

Tico began his calling as a healer in 1970 and during the 29 years that he owned the shop he helped so many people with herbs, vitamins, tinctures and salves, many of which he made himself. When we would go to the shop to pick up the kids we would walk in and try to figure out what concoctions were in the crockpots. They may not have always smelled good, but boy were they miracle cures for so many ailments. I along with a few people in this room had the opportunity to work alongside Tico at one of the three locations and learn just a small part of what he offered to so many over the years. Even after he closed the shop, he had so many people tracking him down to ask for herbs and his free advice he created Tico’s Herb Corner on Facebook to make sure he could be found. One of Tico’s most asked for concoctions was Antonio’s Mix which he made for a friend who had cancer. Another was his seasonal cleanse, that people still swear by.

As people found out that Tico had passed and we read the comments on Facebook, answered phone calls and received text messages, it was amazing to see how Tico truly connected with the community. Whether or not you knew him for many years or just a day he had an impact on your life. It could have been one of his hugs, his genuine handshake or just a good morning. Tico was always willing to help others in any way he could.

As we sat and talked about the comments, phone calls and text messages we started talking about our memories of Tico and we realized that we have so many and it would take days if not weeks to share them. We know you don’t have a few days or weeks to sit here so we decided we would share one or two from each of us (you will only be here for a day)

Melissa’s memories of Tico are how mad he would get because she wouldn’t let him take her picture, but most of all she will never forget how he stepped in to be the father figure to Mario, Audi and Alayna. Mine are of him teaching me to drive a stick shift when I was 16, he and my mom taking me to my very first concert (that is how my love for George Strait started) and a time when I lived in an apartment and had a centipede in the kitchen, I made Tico drive all the way from home to the apartment to kill it for me. Alejandra remembers being with her dad four wheeling in in the mountains in his yellow Jeep Wagoneer, she remembers dancing with him, and their love for Carlos Santana. When she felt sick, she would call him crying and he always had some herbal remedy that he would suggest but just talking to him always made her feel better.
Nicholette’s memories of grandpa are him teaching her how to make smoothies at the shop, the pumpkin frozen yogurt he served, what excellent customer service should be, and how his face lit up when she would drive up in a ford. Mario remembers grandpa listening to Cheech and Chong’s Santa Clause and his old lady every year at Christmas. Nicholette says that grandpa told Mario to stick his tongue on the freezer, but Mario says it was Nicholette, either way grandpa poured cold water instead of hot water to get his tongue unstuck. Marcos’s memories are of grandpa taking care of him at the shop, always having someone to talk to and confide in and always having somewhere to go when the shop was open. What Marcos didn’t say was “having somewhere to go after you dropped me off at school and I would leave” Audi has many memories but the last one of him was this past November, on the day of her dad’s anniversary she got out of work early and they went to eat at Denny’s and then for a drive to Hyde Park. This was the last time that her and grandpa had alone time. Andre remembers when grandpa tried to get him to drink water out of a cup that had a spider in it and the time that him, grandpa and Audi switched out a nice cat with a mean one to trick Mario into feeding it. It didn’t work out because Mario was to smart and he noticed before he opened the kennel. Aurelia’s memories are when he would say “watch come here” with his mischievous grin while holding a bug, sometimes dead, sometimes alive, but mostly dead because he had already had pictures of it. Another memory is of him texting her nearly every day to see how she was doing, which as we were talking about this, we all realized that the daily messages we thought were unique to us were all the same. All us girls got, good morning sweetie, have a good day love you lots, and the boys would get, good morning sir, love you lots, have a great day. He learned cut & paste very well. Angelina will never forget one time that grandpa was visiting them in Florida, and they went to alligator alley to see the alligators and he threw a rock at one so he could take a better picture. He never thought about the fact that they never could have outrun a gator and she also remembers grandpa letting her shift gears while 4 wheeling in the mountains. Reiana’s memories were from one summer where she was visiting and taught grandpa how to use Instagram. She taught him well didn’t she. She also remembers sleeping on the seat from the blue van that grandpa had in the shop instead of in the van (please don’t ask what the kids sat on in the van) Jordan will always remember grandpa taking him to the train shows. Ayana remembers grandpa teaching her how to ride the big black bike without training wheels and is now wondering who is going to teach her’s, Jordan’s and Alayna’s kids how to ride a bike. His little Lovie Alayna will always remember grandpa taking her to McDonalds every day. But what will forever be with her is when he took her to the Pre-K father/daughter dance. Jacob remembers always knowing he was safe after school when he saw grandpa’s car, even if he knew his dad was picking him up. He won first place in archery in his PE class and when he got his ribbon, he wanted to thank grandpa for teaching him. Daniel will always remember the fun drunk times with grandpa and standing alongside him taking pictures and trying to teach him different settings even though grandpa never listened. Mark has a lot of memories with Tico but due to incriminating reasons he refuses to share.

The things we will all remember are his love for raw steak (he was not happy if it wasn’t still mooing), his love for a little coffee with his sugar, his love for salt and how he would grin his guilty grin when he picked up the shaker, checking to see if anyone was going to catch him, his mischievous ways and how he loved to joke around, how the bridge of his nose would go flat when he was not telling the whole truth, and of course let’s not forget his love for butter.

Grandpa Joe will miss Tico’s weekly visits. Uncle Mike, who was the best man at their wedding, remembers that Tico always came to family functions with his camera. Even if people didn’t want to have their picture taken, his infectious smile was contagious and he was eventually able to get a picture, except for Melissa’s of course.

We also sat there thinking about “who is” and came up with our “who is” list:
Who is going to put butter on the bread before making a peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the kids?
Who is going to change to clocks a day early so that everyone gets confused?
Who is going to pick up Audi’s drunk ass at 2 in the morning or my mom and Alejandra when they go out?
Who is going to call Alejandra in the wee hours of the morning, after a few to many shots of tequila?
Who are we going to call to ask what to take when we are sick?
Who is going to make the Thanksgiving turkey and New Year’s menudo?
Who is going to pull the kids feet when waking them up in the morning?
Who is going to unload the car when Ruby, Melissa and Nichol spend the day shopping in Albuquerque?
Who is Mark going to throw paper balls at across the dinner table?
Who is going to let Scrapy out when Mark and I are out town?
Who is going to feed the hummingbirds?
Who is going to go on fieldtrips with the kids?
Who is going to take care of the last minute “oh s**ts” (oh s**t grandpa we forgot the permission slip, we forgot to lock the door, we forgot to the car seat, we forgot to ask you to pick up the kids)?
Who is going to be the school bus driver (because you know after daycare, we have elementary school)?

After listing all of these “who’s going to’s” we were reminded how truly blessed we were to have this amazing man in our lives. Tico would drop whatever he was doing to help, not because he had to but because he wanted to. He did these things because he loved each of us and wanted to make sure we were taken care of.

Our lives will forever be changed without him, but we will do everything possible to make sure he stays as proud of us in death as he was in life. Alejandra please know how proud your dad was of you raising four beautiful children as a single parent. keep being the amazing mom you are and continue teaching your kids what he taught you. Nicholette grandpa is so proud of the mom you are, and he was so proud of you when you bought your house and your next car better be a ford. Audi, I don’t think there are words to explain what you meant to grandpa, but just know that all he wanted was for you to be happy and to continue to be a good mom to his little lovie. Mario, grandpa loved your genuine heart. Continue to help your grandma, because he knew everything you did around the house was to help him help her. Marcos, grandpa was so very proud of his firefighter grandson. Continue helping the community the way he did and, act normal. He admired and appreciated the relationship you had with Mema. Andre, grandpa was so proud to share your art and music with others. You can dedicate your first album to him. Aurelia grandpa was so proud that you moved to another city on your own, that you have a really good job and that you have become a strong independent woman like your mom. Angelina grandpa loved watching videos of you playing in the marching band and was looking forward to going to your graduation in May. Rei always remember how proud he was of what a carrying and compassionate person you are and that he loved watching the videos your mom would send of you dancing, Jordan, Ayana and Alayna, grandpa will live on in all three of you as he was teaching you how to love unconditionally. Melissa he is so grateful to you for letting him step in as a father figure to your kids, and you better start letting us take your picture. I promise you Tico, that I will take care of your best friend and, I’ll be nice to him. Mark, whoever you find to throw paper balls at across the dinner table you better make it a good match. Mom, Tico loved you so very much. He was truly your protector. If one of us got mad at you for getting mad at him he would lose it on us. In his eyes you could do no wrong. Thank you for bringing this amazing man and his daughter into our lives all those years ago.

As Tico would say:
It is “Absolutely Awesome” that you joined us today to celebrate the life our Tico, husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and friend to many.

[01/11/21]   Your wings were ready but our hearts were not. It has been one year today since you left us to be with the Lord. They say that time is a healer but as time goes on, we seem to find it hard to face the fact that you are gone. Not a day goes by we don’t long to have you back. In life we loved you dearly, in death we do the same. Everyday we shed a tear, but only because we love you and wish you were still here. You may be gone, but You will never be forgotten.

In witchcraft and Shamanism the Milk Thistle is used for Protection, Healing, Exorcism and Hex Breaking. You can carry this herb with you or leave it in a bowl in a room. It will renew vitality. It is used as a protective amulet in mojo bags along with other anti-hexing and cleansing herbs.

If you throw milk thistles into fire it will keep lightning away from your home. If you wear a garment made from the thistle it will break any spell. Poppets can be stuffed with it to break spells or aid in protection. In ancient times the thistles were used as a vegetable and are still. The artichoke is the most famous member of the thistle family, but milk thistle can also be eaten as a vegetable.

Use in healing spells and for depression. It is said that when a man carries one he becomes a more intense lover. A method of calling spirits is to boil some thistle, removing it from the heat, seat next to the bowl and begin meditating. Invoke/evoke the spirit of the Milk Thistle plant. Command the familiar to manifest to your consciousness. Speak from the heart, as the steam rises, so will your questions and their answers will be heard.

A bowl of thistle in a room strengthens the spirits and renews vitalizes within. Carry it for strength and energy. Grown in a garden it wards off thieves. Grow in a pot by your doorstep to protect against evil. Keep in your pocket it guards you. Throw it in the fire to ward off lighting. Thistles are used in healing spells, and when men wear it they become better lovers. Thistles also drive out melancholy when worn or carried.
