Don't miss the free premiere party for Ironweed's short film, I AM, at Teatro Paraguas on Friday, August 13th at 7:00pm.

A reception with food and drink will follow the showing of the film. The event is general admission, seating is limited, and the theater will open at 6:30pm.

I AM features original poems and spoken word performances by eight compelling young artists from Santa Fe, Taos, and Albuquerque: 2020 Santa Fe Youth Poet Laureate Artemisio Romero y Carver (pictured), Akyra Cordova, Yovanna Estrada, JezuDePaz, Llamas, Blanca Ortiz, Teresa Romero, and Arwen Scarlata.

The poems in this film, created around the theme of hope, were workshopped under the mentorship of Israel Francisco Haros Lopez, co-founder and Art Director at Alas De Agua Art Collective, and 2021 recipient of the Mayor's Award for Excellence in the Arts. Performances were filmed in outdoor locations throughout Santa Fe including Fort Marcy Park, Cross of the Martyrs, and San Ysidro Crossing.

The film, co-produced by Ironweed Artistic Director Scott Harrison and Kate Kita, is directed by Matt Sanford in collaboration with filmmaker and cinematographer Freedom Hopkins.

This project is supported in part by an award from New Mexico Arts, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs, and by the National Endowment for the Arts.
Teatro Paraguas’ Alix Hudson is bidding Santa Fe adieu.
🚨 Ending next week: "A Sunny Morning" is a light-hearted play involving two octogenarians who meet by chance in a park. After a bit of barbed but polite interchange—and a pinch of snuff—both come to life-altering realizations about their youth, and the strange twists and turns of fate. Playing for FREE on the Teatro Paraguas channel.

In conjunction with the Santa Fe Public Library’s Big Read Project happening in April 2021 celebrating Luis Alberto Urrea’s novel Into The Beautiful North, Teatro Paraguas will present live on Zoom the play adaptation by Karen Zacarias.

Mr. Urrea’s over-the-top epic comedy addresses a panoply of issues surrounding the Border: immigration, narcotics, racism, poverty, and xenophobia. Written in 2009, Into the Beautiful North is an adventure story that parallels the plot of the Hollywood movie, The Magnificent Seven. Set in the village of Tres Camarones in Sinaloa, Mexico, nineteen-year-old Nayeli, the novel’s protagonist, notices that there are no men left in the village – they have all gone north for work and a better life. Fearing that the village will be taken over by narcotraficantes, Nayeli is inspired by The Magnificent Seven to head north and recruit seven men that will become Tres Camarones’ warriors and protectors. She is supported by her Aunt Irma, Tres Camarones’ brash and unapologetic Mayor, and travels north with her Mexican Goth friend Vampi, and the town’s gay internet cafe owner Tacho.

Our friends and partners at Teatro Paraguas will be featured on KUNM’s Radio Theater with their production of Leonard Madrid’s Volver, Volver, Volver on Sunday, January 17th at 6 pm. Both Teatro Paraguas and Leonard Madrid have collaborated on various projects with the NHCC’s Performing Arts program over the years.

In Volver, Volver, Volver, which premiered at the NHCC in 2009, a young man who led a fast and reckless life is called back from the dead by an unknown bruja in Portales, and finds the inner peace that eluded him in life. A number of Madrid’s other works also have premiered at the Center as part of the Words Afire! Festival of New Plays, a collaboration with the University of New Mexico’s Department of Theatre and Dance.

Leonard Madrid works as a designer, actor, playwright, and educator in Albuquerque. His plays Tecolotito, Perla, and Aurora have received the Kennedy Center’s KCACTF Latino Playwriting Award, and other works have received readings and performances around the nation. His participation in the production of Stories of Barelas was a highlight of our 2018-2019 season.

Teatro Paraguas has collaborated with the NHCC for many years, producing many works for our Siembra: Latino Theatre Seasons. The Santa Fe-based company stages contemporary award-winning Latinx plays in English and bilingual productions of Hispanic/Latinx poetry and classic cuentos (folk tales), while promoting children's theatre, producing the works of New Mexico playwrights, and celebrating the history, richness, and diversity of New Mexico's many cultures and artistic talents.

Rehearsals are in full swing for A Musical Piñata for Christmas IX! You don't want to miss this show! In this Spanglish romp, 30 actors of all ages from our Paraguas family are also a literal family -- desperately trying to cobble together a "normal" Christmas for the family matriarch, Mama JoJo (JoJo Sena de Tarnoff). But with the chaos of the kids making biscochitos, the teens creating tree ornaments, the adults fussing over whether to present the Misa del Gallo on Zoom, and Padre and others hitting the Communion wine, chaos and hilarity shine as bright as the Christmas star. https://www.teatroparaguasnm.org

Beginning Friday, December 10, 2021, Teatro Paraguas will present A Musical Piñata for Christmas IX, an annual community celebration for the Holidays, for six live performances. The celebration features a short play written by Alix Hudson and Paola Vengoechea Martini, and directed by JoJo Sena de Tarnoff entitled Marimorena, Biscochitos, and the Fear of Missing Out. The play continues the storyline from last year’s featured play, Home for the Holidays: Con Amor y Gozo, which was performed solely on Zoom. This year’s production is a hybrid offering, with a number of actors participating from New York via Zoom.

The Teatro Paraguas Orchestra, with 10 musicians led by Jeff Tarnoff, will play traditional and contemporary carols, including a few with dance routines choreographed by Xochitl Ehrl. A number of other short plays will be presented, including Oh, Tannenbaum, by Mark Harvey Levine. And Santa Clos will show up at the last minute to help bring down the piñata for all the kids in the audience.

On Saturday, December 18, ArtWalk Santa Fe teams up with Teatro Paraguas for a lively afternoon, with at least 15 local artists selling their creations, food trucks, live music, face painting, and other kid-friendly activities. The festivities begin in Teatro Paraguas’ 2nd Space at 12 noon, and continue until 5:00 p.m. Teatro Paraguas performs at 3:00 p.m. on the Mainstage.

Performances of A Musical Piñata for Christmas IX take place Fridays December 10 and 17 at 7:00 p.m., Saturdays December 11 and 18 at 3:00 p.m., and Sundays December 12 and 19 at 3:00 p.m. Admission is free, and donations are most welcome. Reservations may be made by calling 505-424-1601.

Our Story

One umbrella .... many stories. Teatro Paraguas is the first Southside Theatre company in the Rufina Arts District still offering performances in Santa Fe (TheaterWork was the first), supporting live performance of all types: theatre, dance, poetry, music, and youth education, in English and Spanish when appropriate.

Teatro Paraguas promotes Hispanic and Latino poetry, literature and theater through bilingual presentations of classic and contemporary works, celebrating the history, richness and diversity of Hispanic and Latino cultures.

Teatro Paraguas maintains a 55-seat studio theatre not only for its own productions but as a community resource for performing and literary arts in northern New Mexico and an incubator for emerging theatre groups, youth groups, individual performers, poets and musicians.

We have produced over 100 plays since our debut performance !Neruda: canto porque canto y porque canto! in 2004.

Our work falls roughly into four categories:
-Poetry performance series, which honors Hispanic and Latino poets through dramatic presentations of their poetry
-Classic and contemporary plays, including plays by New Mexico playwrights.
-Cuentos series, which brings traditional Hispanic folk tales to life on the stage
-Spanish language productions onstage and as radio theater

Since 2008, Teatro Paraguas has produced 14 plays by nine New Mexico playwrights. TP is committed to promoting local writers whose work reflects the Hispanic/Latino/New Mexico experience.

Teatro Paraguas is a 501(c)(3) arts organization (FEIN 27-0419425) and serves as fiscal agent for several Santa Fe-based theater companies.

We are open to partnerships with other arts organizations, non-profit service organizations and local businesses, as well as commissions, mentorships, suggestions for programming, comments, and feedback.
