MY STORY

It was a search for answers, a better way to live my life and support my daughters, that led me to a business that I didn't even know existed. Sometimes it's the mess we find ourselves in that creates an open-door.

I started to understand the value of taking care of my body inside and out. Taking responsibility to do this empowered me to take a journey toward building a better life,

Our body has a remarkable ability to naturally cleanse, but less than healthy diets don't help.

So once or twice a year, take a break from unhealthy inflammatory foods and fuel it with clean foods and nutrients that boost enzyme activity and support detoxifying organs.

A cleanse can also jump-start weight loss, reduce food cravings, increase your focus and energy, and improve your mood and your sleep.

If you'd like to delve deeper into the many benefits of cleansing, watch our wellness chat on detox and healthy cleanse in the wellness center.

A low carb diet has been shown to aid in weight loss. But you must not eliminate carbohydrates altogether.

Without carbohydrates to use for fuel, your body switches into a metabolic state called ketosis. And this can put an enormous strain on your kidneys.

Instead, choose the right carbs to eat. Experts recommend carbs with a glycemic level under 80. These foods can give your body enough all-day energy without causing an insulin surge that may store excess body fat. Among these healthy carbs are apples, cherries, grapefruits, oranges, black beans, broccoli, cucumber, lettuce and oatmeal.

One challenge with most weight management programs is that you are often losing the wrong weight.

At the beginning of your diet, the scale seems to be going in the right direction. But you're not only losing fat, you're also losing muscle. Muscle loss slows down your metabolism, which makes it harder to continue losing weight since you're not burning as many calories. This is why most successful dieters regain all of the weight they lost within one year.

Your weight management plan must be designed so that you lose fat but keep the muscle and stay hydrated.

1. Have a meal plan - Make the week’s dinners ahead of time and freeze them. You can also have healthy leftovers for lunch.

2. Choose your snacks wisely - Try healthy snack bars that support your health, or snack on fresh cut veggies.

3. Get interesting with flavor - Try different flavors in your cooking. Jazz up simple veggies with spices, garlic, olive oil, lemon zest, ginger, or even balsamic vinegar.

4. Eat a rainbow - Colorful veggies happen to be full of nutrients. Compounds like carotenes, anthocyanins, lycopene, astaxanthin, and others give the veggies their color and are beneficial for your health.

5. Know the nutrients you need - Women require more iron and calcium than men. Vitamins D and B (especially folate) and essential fatty acids are also important for women’s health.

6. Cut the junk - We’re talking about trans fats, processed foods, too much sugar, and fried foods. A treat here and there is okay; just practice moderation.

7. Be careful with alcohol - Drinking too much can derail your health in a number of ways. Limit yourself to one glass.

Walking is a great way to improve or maintain your overall health. It is a low impact activity, requires minimal equipment, can be done at any time of day and can be performed at your own pace. Here are 5 easy tips to walk more.

2. Dress right - Choose lose, comfortable clothing that gives you plenty of room to move.
3. Enrich the experience - Listen to your favorite music, podcast or audio book.
4. Mall-walk - Just make sure to leave your cash and credit cards at home to avoid temptations to buy at stores.
5. Find a walking partner - It makes the walk more interesting and it helps make you more accountable.

It is so easy to overeat, especially during the holidays. But don’t panic! It happens to the best of us. Unfortunately, all that excess can leave us feeling bloated, nauseous, guilty, and sad.

The most important thing is to remember that your slip-up is not an excuse to forget all about your healthy eating goals. Here are 10 tips to help you bounce back from your holiday binge.

1. Stop feeling guilty about overeating during the holidays. Instead focus on getting back to your healthy habits.

2. Don't weigh yourself yet. It will take time for you to shed those extra pounds.

3. Get rid of all the leftovers that are not part of your healthy eating plan.

4. Go for a nice long walk. It will help burn off the calories and even out your blood sugar.

5. Sleep it off. Sleep deprivation has been associated with an increased appetite so make sure to get at least 7 hours of sleep every night.

6. Go back to your regular eating pattern. Skipping meals doesn't help you recover from binge eating. It may even enhance your cravings leading to another binge.

7. Stay hydrated. Water helps with digestion and fights sodium and carb bloat.

8. Try yoga. Yoga helps promote healthy eating habits and may help prevent emotional eating by reducing stress, depression and anxiety.

9. Develop a regular exercise routine.

10. Practice mindful eating.
