SANTA FE, N.M. – Edward S. Curtis’ (1868-1952) haunting portraits of the American West and its first inhabitants crossed the block on Saturday, June 26, at Santa Fe Art Auction. The first installment of the unparalleled collection of the late dealer and collector Christopher Cardozo (1948-2021), the two-session, 316-lot sale generated roughly $1.8 million, including premium for a diverse selection of Curtis’ rare bound volumes, gelatin-silver prints, cyanotypes, gold-toned prints, and experimental and hand-colored images. Leading the group was Curtis’ masterwork, the 20-volume series The North American Indian, produced between 1907 and 1930...

Fritz Scholder (1937-2005) was a Native American artist, born in Breckenridge, Minnesota. Throughout his painting career, Scholder sought to deconstruct the mythos of the American Indian during the post-modern, abstract expressionist movements and gained prominent acclaim for his pop-surreal style and unique, textured brushwork.

Not unlike the moody subject of this painting Pedro (Pere) Creixams (1893-1965) was a melancholic remembered as an important Spanish painter of the School of Paris. He studied in Barcelona at the Escuela Moderna before settling in Montmartre, Paris, where he applied his talent to imbuing the harlequins, gypsies, musicians, and acrobats of the City of Life with a sense of bohemian pride. Working with important dealer Paul Guillaume, his work appeared regularly alongside that of , and . Creixams’ vivid tones and broad brushstrokes are illustriously representative of the School of Paris in it’s prime. More recently, his work has been exhibited in major shows including in Perpignan and at the Sorbonne.

The Santa Fe Art Auction is the Southwest’s premier auction house for classic and contemporary Western art.
