Here's a nice graphic explaining how lead gets in your tap water. It happens right at your house, so the only way to know if you have lead in your tap water is to test it yourself. If you do, then you will need to filter it out.

Lead contamination in drinking water is caused both by actual lead pipes or by lead in the solder in the fittings. Only by testing for lead at the POS (point of service) will you know if you have lead contamination. If you live in an old house, beware!

Lead in school drinking water is a widespread problem, as the following USA Today article reports.
"We don’t have a state or federal legal requirement to test the water, but we have a moral requirement."
"No amount of lead is safe."

To be on the safe side, have your child bring one or two re-usable water bottles to school. Distilled water is the safest water to drink, and the best re-usable bottles are glass (with a cloth or foam protector).

In California, oil companies can legally dump their toxic wastewater in unlined pits in the ground, where it seeps down into the groundwater. There are 52 such pits on the Central Coast alone, with many more in Kern County.
