Hello, Fans of the Assistance League of Santa Barbara! One of our favorite summer philanthropies, called "Fun in the Sun" was initiated this past Saturday. ALSB supports United Way's summer enrichment program for elementary and junior high children by clothing participants and funding part of the summer swim program. As a reminder, the ALSB Thrift Shop at 1259 Veronica Springs Road (open Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday 10-2), is the major source of income to support our philanthropies. Please be sure to bring us your gently-used donations for resale in the Thrift Shop. Here are some photos of the kids coming to our Fun in the Sun facilities, located next to the Thrift Shop.
The Assistance League of Santa Barbara had its first membership business meeting of the new fiscal year, with newly installed leadership. It was fabulous to have so many members attend the in-person meeting. Presentations were made about the fiscal health of the SB Chapter, along with reports on the many philanthropic services provided by the Chapter. Much success and creativity were displayed along with a demonstration by Las Aletas' 'Kids On The Block' puppet and puppeteer. Las Aletas is getting ready for their summer program, 'Safety Town'.
The membership count is as follows: 301 active members, 145 sustainers, and 19 new members along with the membership of Las Aletas and Assisteens. The 'Fun In The Sun' program co-partnered with United Way is ready to begin. A summer enrichment program for elementary children. Friendship Luncheon chair reported that the 'Friendship' program donated $3,000 towards a garden and butterfly preserve for the Montecito Senior Center. 'School Bell' will begin getting organized in mid-July. This program dresses elementary children in new clothing for the coming school year. Prom Dress just completed loaning gorgeous prom dresses to local high school girls attending their HS Prom. 'VIP Luncheon' just completed honoring middle school students who have demonstrated very improved performance in grades, citizenship, attendance, or attitude.
The meeting ended with a fabulous lunch, provided by The Lunch Committee!

Teen School Bell has also been very busy clothing teens. Many Junior High and High school liaisons in Santa Barbara, Goleta, and Carpinteria have contacted our Committee saying that they have more needy students than ever. Teens are met at Ross to choose two complete outfits for school, including underwear and socks. Marcus Lopez, the Santa Barbara Junior High liaison came to our September meeting to talk about the impact poverty has had on his students, and how proud they are to come back to school after a Teen School Bell shopping trip. It was very moving to hear first-hand about the impact of our work.

Operation School Bell has been very busy now that schools have opened. Children with happy faces leave our School Bell shop with full backpacks including hygiene kits, toothbrushing kits, 3 tops, 3 bottoms, a hoodie, a package of underwear, a package of socks, sports bras (where appropriate), and 2 books of their choosing.
To date, Operation School Bell has clothed 296 students.

We are an all-volunteer non-profit and work hard at our Thrift Shop which brings in most of the funds needed to support our 14 philanthropies. However, we also have lots of fun and social activities which provides a great opportunity for our participating volunteers to get to know each other better. Just so you know, when we do socialize the cost of these activities comes from our own pockets. We don't use ALSB funds for these events.
This past Tuesday we visited our local Santa Barbara Maritime Museum at the Harbor. What a treat! Our tour guide was incredibly informative and knowledgeable about the history of our harbor, and all matters associated with it...past and present. Here are some great photos of our tour. Put this gorgeous local museum on your 'to do' list.
