As America marks 250 years of history, the National Garden Bureau is proud to celebrate the incredible innovators who have shaped the nation’s landscape from the very beginning: our members.
Today, we are honoring a true global pioneer in horticulture: Ernst Benary Seed Co.
🌸 From Gregor Mendel to the Titanic: A Historic Legacy
Founded in 1843 in Erfurt, Germany, Ernst Benary Seed Co. is the world’s oldest plant breeding company. Over its rich, 6-generation history, Benary has quite literally woven itself into the fabric of global and American history.
- Scientific Roots: Did you know the father of genetics, Gregor Mendel, used Benary’s pea seeds for his groundbreaking experiments?
- A Fateful Voyage: Benary even provided seeds to the ill-fated Titanic.
- Resilience & Rebirth: After losing everything and being disowned following World War II, the family rebuilt from scratch. Today, they remain fiercely independent and family-owned, exporting seeds to over 120 countries.
