Quick takeaway: lifting is great for your brain, but cardio targets something specific â memory.
A massive analysis (4M+ people) found 39% lower dementia risk in people with high cardio fitness. One study even showed a year of cardio grew the hippocampus by 2%, the brain region Alzheimerâs hits hardest.
Lifting alone isnât wasted. It has its own real cognitive benefits. But for memory specifically, cardio has the strongest evidence.
The move: do both. đ§ đȘ
Meet Shannon, owner of here in Ventura.
She came in feeling an imbalance she couldnât quite explain. We put her on the VALD ForceDecks and the data backed up what she felt. It helped us connect the dots.
This is why evidence based Pilates, strength training, and PT work best together. Pilates builds control. PT finds whatâs driving the imbalance. Strength training closes the gap.
We gave Shannon a few targeted exercises. In a few weeks we retest to see the change in black and white.

Golden State Performance is growing, and we are so excited to introduce the newest member of our team.
Meet Jewelyssa â our new administrative team member who will be helping us deliver the seamless, high-quality experience our patients deserve from day one.
Jewelyssa is currently pursuing her Bachelorâs degree in Kinesiology: Applied Fitness at CSUN, with a strong interest in strength and conditioning. A former competitive soccer player and swimmer turned strength training enthusiast, she understands the athlete mindset because she lives it.
Outside of the gym and classroom, youâll find her at a concert, a sporting event, or winning game night with friends and family. We are so glad sheâs here. Welcome to the team, Jewelyssa. đ§Ą
Athletes spend a lot of time training the things they can see in the mirror. Thoracic mobility rarely makes the highlight reelâŠuntil your shoulder starts complaining, your low back is always tight, or your overhead position looks like a question mark.
This is my go-to flow after long stretches at a computer or between training sessions. Five moves, all targeting thoracic mobility:
The sequence:
â T-spine extension + lat pullover over foam roller (core on â donât let your low back arch)
â T-spine rotations on the roller
â Quadruped thread the needle, band assisted
â Quadruped T-spine rotations, band assisted
â Half kneeling T-spine mobilization at the wall
The band assistance on the quadruped work is a game changer if you feel like youâre fighting for range â it helps you access rotation you might not be able to get on your own yet.
Save this one. Your shoulders and low back will thank you. đ§Ą

Start in a plank. Squeeze a ball between your elbow and knee with one foot on the ground, core engaged.
Now rotate into a side plank, extend that leg straight⊠and come back without dropping the ball.
Sounds simple. Feels impossible to do perfectly. đ
