Everything builds upon the next
Building
Blocks
Which is why, sometimes, it’s just as important to take apart as it is to build up. The dismantling of false foundations can sometimes be just as constructive in the end. Wishing you all a constructive day in all its various iterations and forms ❤️

Don’t despise the small things and don’t resent the slow and tedious.
Building
Blocks
For the grandest things are built on a firm foundation— carved unsuspectingly over time. The gift then is to find joy and beauty in the right and good process of being molded over time instead of manipulating time to our own end.
Here’s to the sometimes mundane but - in the end- magnificent moments of each new day!

Playtime! …When a fountain ain’t just a fountain. So (I wonder) why should a chair be “just a chair”?

Admittedly, I have a passion for taking ordinary objects and making them “extra”. Cause who couldn’t use a little extra-ordinary in their lives? 😊

Hope you have an extraordinary day, friends!

What dreams may come… one of my happy places is sitting, sketching, imagining what functional forms may come to soon be unearthed in the shop. I find wonder in the process of visualizing, imagining and eventually realizing new shapes and forms. This process disrupts the tyranny of monotony and frustrates boredom. May we each press into the wonder of imagination and awe available in each new day.
From my house to yours… happy “wondering”!

What surprising places do you find beauty in?

Happy 2023, Friends

At this age (stage?), I’m not much of one for New Year’s resolutions. Past years have taught me how very *not* in control of outcomes I actually am. Much of life has occurred as a series of crisis and graces— with stretches of mundane fit in between. Each season has offered its gifts and challenges. Yet I often find I’m not much able to receive the gifts of the current season if I’m set on forcing it into a predetermined mold. And so I offer this year up much like I hope to offer up all of my years— openhanded— expectant of beauty but open hearted to what form that beauty may take.

What the studio looks like these days ❤️

Lately most of my “studio days” have turned into “caretaking days”. Although I’ll always wrestle with the pull towards desired productivity, if I can step back and survey the landscape, my greatest creations are the two standing beside me.

To all moms everywhere juggling creativity and caretaking (and, let’s be honest, so much better), you are doing THE work. The good good work ❤️

The more I live, the more I learn it’s less about where I go and what I do but more about how I show up in the circles I’m currently in. This, to the best of my knowledge, is the stairway to heaven— the heaven come down.

“How lonely the word PEACE is becoming.
Missing her small house under the olive trees.
……
Sometimes she feels very lonely on the earth.
She wants to walk openly with children.
Live the way they might.
Have a party with white cookies in simple plates.
Nuts chopped fine.
She wants everyone to share.”

Introducing… the “Stairway to Heaven” chair (2021)

One of my New Years resolutions this year is to look for “bits of Heaven” throughout my day. My 3 year old running in the grass with ruthless and untamed hair flung about her. The bird that hops on my back porch in search of rogue bird seed that’s escaped the confines of the nearby bird feeder. Or the tangible and all consuming love that hits me at spontaneous and seemingly mundane moments. These and so many more such moments often pass me by unnoticed. But what ascent I gain when I can open myself up to the “bits of Heaven” unassuming yet all around me.

In hopes of communal and shared bits of Heaven, I introduce to you the “Stairway to Heaven” Chair. May 2021 bring Heaven closer even as you awaken to its presence about you.

Floor Scrapers. It takes many a skilled laborer to make a society function. I’m grateful for all the skilled contributions that form our diverse and vibrant community.

Let’s thank a neighborhood helper today.

There is honor in work. There is glory in a job. And there is character gained in showing up in the menial tasks of the day. In our prestige obsessed culture, I can often find myself esteeming the hypothetical placement over the honorable laboring. If I’m not careful, instead of being present in the mundane work of the day, I can find the tangible has been eclipsed by the theoretical.

For this reason, I’m drawn to Gustave Caillebotte’s “Les Raboteurs de Parquet” (translated “Floor Scrapers”). The painting’s raw depiction of laborers hard at work gives honor to a job being completed in the midst of real life. There’s dirt and grit all about the building and body, there’s conversation being enjoyed in the midst of working, and there’s wine waiting to be shared together after one’s labor is completed.

And isn’t that a darn good representation of a good day’s work? A little grit, a little fellowship, and a celebration to wrap it all up.

May we all show up well in the glorious and the inglorious jobs of the day. May we all find honor in hard work.
