A Place of Her Own

This is the philosophy we've evolved with @
A PLACE OF HER OWN. It is completely true about our family patterns. Sharing our stories works, we use visual art and discussion, but any method would work
Hungry Ghosts: Ancestral Patterns. It took a village to create this installation.

The importance of excavating and naming your Hungry Ghosts or Ancestral Family patterns. Chances are you are repeating generations of patterns born from familial coping mechanisms developed centuries ago. They were reactions to familial, cultural, governmental, societal and geographical trauma. This is the giant step in letting go of the past in order to redefine your future without the drama. This is part of the work we do at A PLACE OF HER OWN.

So wonderful to meet you all last week! Sending creative joyous thoughts as you birth your "Place"....

Thought I'd share this with you:
"There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening, that is translated through you into action. And because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique and if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost. It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how valuable, nor how it compares to other expressions. It is your business to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that activate you. Keep the channel open."----Martha Graham
These are my rocks sitting on my art studio table. These are three beliefs that weigh me down. Thank you, Cynthia, for the opportunity to note and feel them.
Dear Cynthia Tom,

Your compassion makes my heart smile.

If only all teachers were like you.

Your helping me construct "belief statements" opened another channel for me today. "Icky" channel but that's okay. This is why I enrolled in your course.

Dusky Pierce taught me Emotional Freedom Technique so I do know that ... even though I don't articulate right away, I completely accept myself.

I look forward to each class at A PLACE OF HER OWN so that more "ick" will come out.

With love and respect!

This is a long overdue post. Folks have until Nov 19 to sign up for the next round of A Place of Her Own workshop series.

I participated in a short summer version in 2015 and then delved into the semester long program in 2016.

I can see a direct correlation in my family life. Having participated in the program has propelled me to have the conversations with my family... about family history, which in turn got my family to start having more conversations, which then in turn got my relatives to continue having the conversations... and on and on. It also took me about a year to be able to reflect that having taken part in PLACE Program helps me take on work and family issues with more confidence, see things with more clarity, and unafraid to risk the face (vs. saving face) in favor of integrity.

Also, I got to meet and get to know some of the loveliest, most accepting and supportive women around. I hope you join Cynthia Tom in this journey. See the pinned post above for more information.

Healing is our radical act of protest.
PLACE has been awarded the IMPACT grant and the Operations Grant from CA Arts Council
AND the Cultural Equity Initiative Grant from SF Arts Commission.
It is a red letter year. Thank you to the Arts Commission and the Arts Council for believing in this arts based healing program and organization. WE ROCK. WE make a difference.

My friends it takes a village.
Deeply grateful to Shari Arai DeBoer for her decades of making sure I dotted the "i"s and crossed the "T"s on all the grants I've written. Shes the detail person. Deep thanks for the invaluable Barbara Mumby for her vision, and Patricia Zamora for her encouragement and hours of editing. Julia Randall for her experienced voice Julie Andersen for a broad stroke eye, Ahran Lee for her wordsmithing talent and encouragement.
And to the A Place of Her Own alumnae who through their brave fortitude and creativity keep giving me new examples of how PLACE continues to work

Art is essential! Today we announce our 2021 grant recipients, awarded with a focus on healing our communities; keeping the doors of our arts & cultural institutions open; protecting jobs in the creative field; and preserving our cultural heritage: http://tiny.cc/CACGrantees2021

We are still here and thinking about how to help our communities navigate with hope and inner wisdom.
All of us are traveling through life stuff. We are still finding miracles daily, looking to heal that which starts as a hurt but opens the doorway to the next layer to let go of. What can you begin to let go of today? What luggage are you carrying around needlessly.

Love Letters To Myself. Have you ever said kind, loving, thankful things to your inner child?
Need inspiration? This song, Solo Tu by Manicato, written by Israel Matos to his daughter Mari is the perfect example of how to talk to our little child.
Its full of love and compassion. Of course vocals include the love and support of my life Cris Matos.
i imagine my father singing this to me, I imagine myself singing this to my little self .
i listen to Cris speak of and to all his children, grandchildren and a great grandchild this way and learn. I wish to do this for ourselves. heal yourself and each other.

Artist's workshop utilizes art's transformative power to heal - HVY Journalists

Thank you Jonathan Farrell for bringing our work at A Place of Her Own and my own artwork to the public's attention. It is time for everyone to comprehend that healing womxn of color, people of color and all womxn, at its roots, takes a deep look into the ancestral systematic oppression and trauma. We have, without question, accepted our ancestors' coping mechanisms as our own and turned them into feelings of self-doubt, self- loathing and unworthiness. These teachings, are learned and repeated through generations, however, they are not who we are. It takes tremendous and persistent effort to recognize, name and dismantle those voices we adopted as our own, telling ourselves that we are unworthy and don't matter, to keep our heads down and suffer in silence. Guilt and shame are tools of oppression. Fears have to be named and tools created to encourage taking agency over your life. PLACE swims in this creative space, fighting a battle from a feminine perspective.

PLACE just started, the first of many arts based healing meetings.
In the beginning, we ask participants to define their Beliefs That Hold Them Back. We believe one needs to name their Hungry Ghosts in order to release them.
Then they select 3 to 5 and write them on palm size rocks to experience the weight of those beliefs that make your life wait..there's more...later.
Cris Matos (PLACE advisor) shares his wisdom, in response to tossing them into the oven when we are ready. Quote:
"The First Nation People of Turtle Island believe that rocks are living beings. Their (our) name for rocks is: Sitting People. I believe as they do. I also believe that your expectation about releasing the negative energies is right on target. Your faith and intention are very strong and powerful. I believe the living rock will release the negativity into the living Ocean which will absorb those energies. When the mind and heart are as one, there is nothing that can prevail against them. Your success is imminent, unstoppable, and joyous! "

General information

If you had a place of your own what would it be? Using artmaking, meditation and basic Chakra learning, we help women work towards creating an artistic answer to this question by unraveling beliefs that hold women back, excavating family patterns, discovering aspirations, and intuitively creating art through use found objects. Program workshops have 2 tracks, one is short term individual components of the full program and the full PLACE program runs 6 months and includes participation in a professional art exhibition and public events. The semester version is where the transformation really begins.
