L5 to S1 disc is the most common cause of severe lower back pain. We have to keep the hips and core in balance with each other to have harmony in this area.

The L5-S1 (lowest lumbar vertebra, in its connection to the sacrum) is a common site for disc herniation, due to its angle and positioning as the body's center of gravity. The lumbar vertebrae need to have a certain concave curvature (in towards the belly button) in order for the intervertebral discs to have space to breath. In other words, when people sit in a chair all day, the abs relax, and the posture tends to slouch forward. This tends to compress the discs. Compounding the problem in the sitting position is the lack of proper circulation around the powerful muscles of the hips, which then become tight from a lack of movement.�Now a kicker, the hips tend to rotate, and this puts a rotating pressure on the lower back. Then to understand why the lower back discs tends to herniate is because the lower back is not made to rotate, and bend forward at the same time. Because of habits people tend to fall into that favor one side of the body habitually, such as standing on one leg all the time, sleeping on the same side of the body every night, and crossing the same leg when a person sits. THIS tends to create an imbalance in tension from the right to left sides of the hips. When the hips rotate enough the person only needs to bend the lumbar spine forward folding at just the wrong angle without any abdominal bracing and a disc at L5 can herniate.�When a person is sitting in a chair all day, the hips are in the exact same 90 degree angle as if they were bending forward. With enough tension in the hips, weight in the upper body, and lock of abdominal support, and I have seen many people herniate a disc simply sitting there at their desks. Even the muscles of the lower spine can have fatty infiltrate. This is a sign of the muscles beginning to atrophy.�So, how can massage help? Well, a talented massage therapist, such as myself can see how the hips get out of alignment due to the imbalance in muscular tension. (There are other misalignments that a chiropractor can adjust at the sacro-iliac joint) Deep tissue massage to these hip muscles takes a huge amount of pressure off the lumbar spine, and discs. It does not just put the disc into place, but the pressure can feel as if it comes off with regular treatment. Really what you want to do is keep the inflammation down in order to forget that you ever herniated a disc.�The reason peoples herniated disc hurts for months at a time is because this is an area that can stay inflamed for long periods of time without treatment. This is why massage helps the herniated disc. At L5-S1. Massage can help the tilt of the pelvis due to major tension in the hamstrings, quadriceps, and hips.�After that the best thing you can do is focus on strengthening the core for the rest of your life, because when the core stabilizes the movement, then the lower back does not have to take the blunt end of the force of your movement. Hope stretched for lower back pain. Get off your couch!

Ever get back pain on just ONE side of your lower back? Ever have knee pain on just ONE KNEE? Ever feel a straining in just ONE hamstring while running? Hip pain at the top of only one hip? This is for YOU! Try this six to ten minute hip release on a daily basis, and experience how better alignment gives you the ability to live in your body without these pains.

This hip release sequence is something that I teach to people on a daily basis, because a majority of the population has an imbalance of tension between the right and left sides of the hips. The muscles of the hips are positioned to stabilize the sacrum, but then tension patterns get out of balance from the right to the left, and one sided lower back pain is almost guaranteed.

For people that feel lower back pain when bending forward, or getting out of the chair; there is actually a reason that you feel this, but first I want to apologize for the quality of these photos. It actually proved to be much more challenging to take selfies while in Pigeon Pose then I had ever expected, and I don't have much spare time!

Start in the deep standing lunge that is in the center of the picture, and take five slow deep breaths. Then take the "Funky Pigeon" in photo number one with your ankle right under your chin. If it feels super intense put a yoga block under your knee, and even a bolster under your hips can really reduce your pain that comes with unleashing this deep hip tension. This angle clear up the hip imbalance that makes one leg appear shorter then the other. Hold this position for one minute, then move on to position number two.

In number two or "Half Pigeon" the shin is parallel with the collar bones, and your foot is directly under the opposite shoulder. (Right foot under left shoulder for example.) Scoot your back knee back until the stretch comes to tension. Let your hips drop as they face the floor. Bring the center of your chest toward the center of your shin. Again, a block under your front knee can really reduce the pain if this is a deep tight stretch. Don't let the foot slide under your hip! That's the next posture. Hold for one minute before continuing to angle number three.

Slide your knee directly under your chin, so if your on a yoga mat the knee is directly in the center of the mat. Open the knee to 90 degrees by pulling the calf away from your hamstring. Lay your Illiotibial Band (ITB) to the floor and then twist to make your hips face strait down. Draw the center of your chest toward the knee cap under your body. This angle releases the ITB and gluteus minimums, and is really good for knee pain that comes from running, and cycling. Before you let anybody tell you that your too old for these sports; try this release! Hold this position for one minute. For some people a bolster to sit on is a true help, and for others this is the easiest angle. Finish with the same high standing lunge shown in the middle of the page, and your done! Wheeewheeeew you did it!

Practice daily for best results. I tell a lot of my clients to practice this before bed, because reducing hip tension can drastically improve your ability to fall asleep and stay asleep. For runners or cyclers it's a great warm up and cool down. Make sure your flutes are engaging to save yourself that one sided hamstring strain!
