May is National Osteoporosis Awareness Month

Osteoporosis is a term used to describe brittle bones and also the risk for having a broken bone. Osteoporosis literally means “porous bone”. Your bones can lose thickness and strength as you age. You can easily find out how healthy your bones are through a DEXA scan, which measures bone density (strength). If you meet the following criteria, you should have a bi-annual DEXA scan:
• You are a woman aged 65 or older or a man 70 or older
• You have broken a bone after age 50
• You are a menopausal woman with risk factors
