Our friends at The UpTake are downtown Minneapolis today with families impacted by police violence.
Many arrests have been made over the past couple nights. 55 people were arrested Monday night and taken to Hennepin County Jail , many of whom are still there. Last nights arrests became more aggressive as in addition to protesters and media, residents of the area spectating from their homes were also seen being taken out of out or right in front of their homes and detained by police

This at a time where Covid numbers are on the rise as reported by the Minnesota Department of Health and as we continue to see a high number of Covid cases within our correctional facilities. The Minnesota Correctional Facility in Stillwater had 70 new cases this week. The UpTake Jermaine who is currently incarcerated at Stillwater Prison wrote this email to the Uptake ED after contracted Covid for the 2nd time. As he states in his email , although his symptoms continue to advance including difficulty breathing he has not been takin to the hospital.

Our story on the recent conversation with Gov. Walz and Lt. Gov. Flanagan — in combination with The UpTake and other authentically community-based journalism outlets — about trauma-informed budget, affordable housing, multicultural education, taxation, and more. https://www.womenspress.com/governor-walz-lieutenant-governor-flanagan-talk-healing-trauma-mmir-budget/
Check out the clip from The UpTake of my segment with Governor Tim Walz and Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan. We each had time for 1 question and at first I planned on condensing mine but then I thought nope-go big or go home!

I can’t wait to get the footage where you can see everyone so you can see the Gov & Lt Gov crackin up when I was talking about how my power went out and because of that I was looking like the phantom as I only had lighting on one side of my face-and I talked about my eyelash falling off (couldn’t put it back on-no light 😩)

Watch til the end ☺️
This was a great event that The UpTake put together. My power went out right as this started. I had no lighting, WiFi, nthn. Thankfully I was able to hop on my phone that was fully charged quickly right before the Gov and Lt Gov actually joined us on zoom

When I tell y’all I almost lost it. My makeup was ruined from tears steaming down my face, eyelash hanging off but I thought screw all that I’m not missing this opportunity to finally speak this man. My lighting was trash but my question was fire 🔥!!! Lol and that’s what counts! 💪🏾

Peep me around the 32:50 mark 🙂
Today The UpTake KILT our press conference with Governor Tim Walz! I will stream it very soon!

Quick story , my power went out 2 minutes before we went live. When I tell you I FREAKED TF out! I had no lighting, no wifi, nothing. I’m like like oh helllll no! Everything shut down! Y’all know I have waited to talk to Walz forever!

I told myself there’s no way I’m going to let this ruin my opportunity to finally speak to him and invite him on my show

Long story short , thankfully my phone was fully charged and doesn’t need wifi. I had a whole nice set up and then the power went out so I thought you know what it’s not about the background it’s about the quality of the conversation

So what you see here is the moment Walz said that not only will he come on my show he will get his team on it right away!

This is what black women do all day-make lemonade out of lemons !
Had a great one-hour conversation this morning with Gov. Walz and Lt. Gov. Flanagan about the budget, thanks to our partnership with The UpTake. More to come online and in our April issue.
Tune in to Channel 19 at 8:00am for a special #CommunityMedia conversation with Governor Tim Walz and Lt. Governor Peggy Flanagan about Minnesota’s budget. This event is sponsored by The UpTake and can also be seen on their page.
Due to COVID, the Green Party of MN is struggling to get 2000 signatures to get a ballot line for our great candidates, Howie Hawkins and Angela Walker https://howiehawkins.us/ We have an electronic nominating petition if you can sign before 8/15. By signing the petition, you are not required or even support the Green Party, but rather allow us to participate in the political arena to advance issues such as Medicare for All, renewable energy and reduce the bloated military budget to bring $ back into our communities. Note that the Hawkins campaign is already being sued in 7 states for ballot access for trying to participate and tap into the 42% of eligible voters who don't vote.

Minnesota school board elections face a coordinated push by critics of Critical Race Theory, vaccines and masks

Right-wing media and Facebook groups have amplified conspiracies that are trickling into school board elections around the Twin Cities, elevating concerns around equity efforts. Reporting by J.D. Duggan.

Minnesota school board elections face a coordinated push by critics of Critical Race Theory, vaccines and masks Conservative media outlets and thinktanks have ignited a groundswell of fear and anger about Critical Race Theory, vaccines and mask mandates in schools. [09/23/21]   Just $258 left to meet our $2500 goal. Remember you can give here or via GiveMN.

[09/23/21]   We have just $813 left to raise of our $2500 goal. Please give what you can. There’s no donation too small, no donation too big.

[09/22/21]   Thanks to all who donated today. Between social media donations and GiveMN, we’ve raised $1006. We still have $1500 to raise but $1006 is a great way to start our fundraiser and end day-1 of this fundraiser. Thank you to all!

[09/22/21]   Between social media and GiveMN, we’ve raised $690 today. We’re trying to reach $1000 today, as part of our overall goal of $2500. Please give what you can and know that every dollar helps.

[09/22/21]   The UpTake has a problem and we need your help. Our website needs to be rebuilt from scratch, because of some major security, design, and accessibility issues.

Our reporters are putting out great work every single day, but because of the challenges our website faces, that information is not getting to you.

Whether it's to share our work more effectively, create a stronger and more informed community, or fundraise, our site is no longer doing what we need it to do and it needs more than just simple repairs. Without a new website, we may as well shut this organization down.

Here's the Good News. We have already received $5000 from the McKnight Foundation, but after collecting numerous proposals for a website rebuild, we're still short of the remaining $2500 that we need and that's for the most affordable proposal.

We need to raise this money now and we need your help.

If 100 people donate just $25 each, we would have more than enough money to rebuild the website, archive our current site, and maintain our new website.

As front-line workers wait, Minnesota state legislature negotiations on “hero pay” stall - Prism

We’re partnering with Prism, a national news outlet, to cover worker’s rights issues across the state and to promote those stories. Here’s the first piece in that series:

https://prismreports.org/2021/09/16/as-front-line-workers-wait-minnesota-state-legislature-negotiations-on-hero-pay-stall/

As front-line workers wait, Minnesota state legislature negotiations on “hero pay” stall - Prism The Minnesota State Legislature committed to $250 million in May for “hero pay” for frontline workers across the state. A working group was formed to develop a plan for distributing that money. While that deadline has passed, legislators and workers are still hopeful.

[08/24/21]   The UpTake just expanded its livetweeting to school boards in MN and we’re looking for individuals who want to get paid to livetweet and report on those meetings. Our rate is $25/hour for livetweeting and 30 cents/word for reporting. Free training provided. Most of our published stories are around 1000 words or so. DM me to schedule a follow-up conversation and to get more training. Reporters must be based in MN. Primary school boards of interest are in the MSP metro area.

The UpTake is launching a big fundraiser today as we try and raise $5000 to help us cover the costs of last month's coverage and to ensure we have the resources we need to continue our work through the summer. We'll be sharing testimonials from our staff, our Board, and our organization's partners in the hours and days ahead. Please give what you can.

[Image: Text on a green background that reads: Covering the state legislature for the UpTake has been eye-opening. I've learned so much about Minnesota's legislative process, covering everything from taxes, to criminal justice policy, governance, healthcare and education. As a journalist interested in issues of racial justice, faith, community healing and conflict resolution, getting to report on the legislature has helped me connect current policy debates with the local policy-making process and helped me learn how bills are passed, and what mechanisms exist in our democracy to hold state representatives accountable in positive ways. What I love about reporting for the UpTake is the emphasis on racial equity and economic justice, and the intentionality of coverage and in how we cultivate community relationships and build trust. We don't just swoop in and do helicopter journalism. I feel so proud to be a part of an organization that creates space for journalists to connect storytelling with issues the community cares about. This is The UpTake’s Executive Director, Cirien. The UpTake is launching a fundraiser to raise $5000 over the next few weeks. Over the last month we had 24/7 attention on both the MN State Legislature, the trial and community, and other important stories.

https://www.givemn.org/organization/Uptake

I don’t do a good enough job promoting The UpTake, because I get stuck in a cycle of doing or supporting the work.

But we need your help - if you care about The UpTake’s work (the podcasts, text reporting, The Quilt, legislative monitoring, or livestream), please share a few sentences here and please, if you’re able, give.

The hardest part of running a nonprofit - and the part I suck at most - is fundraising. But I’m hoping to show case the power of our team over the next few weeks and bring the money that we need in.
