Meet Dr. Evan Zahn, from Smidt Heart Institute at Cedars-Sinai! An expert in treating children born with life-threatening structural heart problems, Dr. Zahn is leading the way on the study of congenital heart defects (#CHDs). How? By bringing more minimally invasive treatments AND by developing the world’s first Food & Drug Administration-approved transcatheter device—the Amplatzer Piccolo™ Occluder. Smaller than the size of a pea, this medical innovation can be implanted in premature babies using a minimally invasive procedure and used to treat patent ductus arteriosus, or PDA.

The Children’s Heart Foundation celebrates diversity and recognizes the need for representation and anti-racist efforts to achieve equity in the field of congenital heart defect research, and to ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) that leads to better health care for all. Tomorrow is #Juneteenth. In honor of this momentous day, we're proud to highlight the work of Dr. Daniel Hale Williams who founded the first Black-owned hospital in America, and performed the world's first successful open-heart surgery. ❤️

Determined that Chicago should have a hospital where both Black and white doctors could study and where Black nurses could receive training, Williams rallied for a hospital open to all races. After months of hard work, he opened Provident Hospital and Training School for Nurses on May 4, 1891, the country's first in*******al hospital and nursing school.

In 1893, Dr. Williams performed the nation’s first open-heart surgery. The operation was done without X-rays, antibiotics, surgical prep-work, or tools of modern surgery. He was truly a pioneer in the field. ❤️ In 1895, he co-founded the National Medical Association, a professional organization for Black medical practitioners. This organization was instituted as an alternative to the all-white American Medical Association that did not extend membership to Black doctors. In 1913, he became the first African American to be inducted into the American College of Surgeons.
