DID YOU KNOW that insurance plans routinely set limits for medical equip like electric #wheelchairs at $2K (or less), but they often require customization costing up to $50K? That's not only unfair. It should be illegal. That's why Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF) and others are suing #California to change minimum requirements for what health plans must cover. The Los Angeles Times does a great job detailing the personal stories behind the issues here -- includes interviews with Disability Rights Education and Defense Fund (DREDF) board member Anne Cohen and staff attorney Carly Myers, in addition to insights from California Foundation for Independent Living Centers - CFILC's Christina Mills (also a DREDF board member) and Russell Rawlings.

This First Responders Day, we’re extending our gratitude and appreciation to all the various First Responders across California and the Country, but also to the nineteen Disability Disaster Access & Resource Centers (DDARCs) that support individuals with disabilities and access and functional needs in preparing for disaster and emergencies, including Public Safety Power Shutoffs.

Climate change, natural disasters, pandemics and other types of emergencies impact the lives of people with disabilities in significant ways. Programs and services must be strategically provided to people with disabilities through an accessibility lens that comes from personal experience and disability expertise. For example, teaching individuals how to put together what is typically thought about as a simple Go-Bag takes careful thought and unique supplies depending on an individual’s access and functional needs.

In the world of preparedness for disabled people there is no one size fits all. There are critical conversations needed to ensuring safety, resiliency and independent living. Collectively DDARCs have provided support and resources to over 4,100 disabled individuals across California. This includes short term lodging, portable backup batteries, food assistance and rides.

It takes dedication, hard work and dependability to be any type of First Responder.

Thank you all for your service.
