Self Help Counties Coalition Self Help Counties Coalition member counties fund California’s transportation infrastructure by approving a 1/2 cent sales tax by a 2/3 voter margin.

There are 19 self-help counties in California, representing 81 percent of the population or roughly 30 million people. The SHCC member agencies generate, on average, over $4 billion each and every year for transportation projects creating tens of thousands of jobs.

Self Help Counties Fast Facts • 19 self-help counties in California • Self-help counties represent 81 percent of the population in California o California population: 37 million o Self-help county population: 30 million • $4.2 billion: estimated annual revenue from local transportation sales tax o $2.3 billion from fixed-measures o $1.9 billion from permanent measures • Existing programs represent a total investment (over the life of all measures) of more than $140 billion in local sales tax dollars for transportation • LAO report from January 2011 shows that more than 60 percent of state funding comes from local sales tax measures for transportation o Roughly $7 billion annually comes from the state for transportation funding, primarily from the state excise tax on gasoline o About $11 billion per year from local fund sources is used for transportation purposes, including optional local sales taxes, a statewide 0.25 percent sales tax on all goods and services and transit fares ($4.2 billion of that is estimated to come local transportation sales tax).
