On March 28, an estimated 50,000 Puerto Ricans flooded San Juan — from El Escambrón to the Capitol to La Fortaleza. Children dressed as vejigantes. A sea of people carrying a giant Cabo Rojo flag. Chanting: “Esencia es violencia, aquí está la resistencia.”

50,000 people. On an island of 3 million. That is not a protest. That is a mandate.

Here’s what they were marching against: Foreign billionaires want to build a $2 billion private city on 1,549 cuerdas of Cabo Rojo’s Caribbean coast — 1,132 luxury homes, a private airport, luxury hotels — while the government hands them $498 million in tax credits ($413 out of every taxpayer’s pocket), exempts them from municipal taxes, and coached them on how to grab even more. No clawback clause. No accountability. Residents already go days without water. Property values are surging. Families are being pushed out before a single brick is laid.

Senate Bill 273 proposed by Senator Thomas Rivera Schatz poses a significant threat to Puerto Rico’s cultural heritage. By dismantling the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture (ICP) and transferring its responsibilities to the Department of Economic Development and Commerce (DDEC), the bill prioritizes economic development over cultural preservation. This shift could lead to the neglect and exploitation of Puerto Rico’s cultural assets, potentially eroding the island’s unique identity.

Furthermore, the proposed transfer of control and approval of construction permits on cultural heritage sites to the OGPe could result in irreversible damage to historical landmarks. It is clear that increased funding for the ICP would be beneficial, as cultural development and economic growth are closely linked.

Senate Bill 273 is not the answer. It would weaken Puerto Rican culture and place its assets in the hands of a select few. We must stand against this bill to protect Puerto Rico’s cultural heritage. The Institute of Puerto Rican Culture is vital; we cannot allow it to be destroyed.

Rep. Carlos Méndez’s proposal to redefine Puerto Rico’s maritime-terrestrial zone and the ESENCIA project in Cabo Rojo have sparked controversy. These initiatives will lead to privatization of beaches, environmental damage, social exclusion, and neocolonialism. Additionally, government scandals have eroded public trust. Puerto Ricans must actively defend their homeland and natural resources against these threats to ensure a just and sustainable future.

The University of Puerto Rico (UPR) is getting wrecked. The Fiscal Control Board’s budget cuts and the PNP administration’s policies are messing up the university system. This means fewer resources, students, programs, and staff. The UPR’s president had to stop admissions to 64 academic programs, mostly in education, humanities, and social sciences, because of budget cuts. These attacks on the UPR are on purpose, aiming to make education out of reach for most Puerto Ricans and keep people from fighting for their rights.

Tuition costs have gone way up, financial aid has been cut, and there’s no more affordable housing for students. This has caused a huge drop in enrollment. Many students have decided not to go to school because it’s too expensive and there’s no place to live. Also, UPR staff are paid poorly, with some earning less than the minimum wage. Many teachers are overworked because there aren’t enough staff and they don’t have job security. Budget cuts have also caused many positions to be frozen, and the quality of teaching and research has gone downhill.

The infrastructure across all 11 UPR campuses is falling apart. Buildings have cracks, collapses, and leaking roofs. Classrooms have been closed off because of mold, and important equipment has been damaged. Campuses have constant power outages, forcing many students to study online from home.

We need to join the fight to defend our university and demand a public, accessible, and quality education for all Puerto Ricans. The fight for the UPR is a fight for our nation and our future. We need to organize and protest.
