Quite a bit of you are new here, so I thought it would be helpful to reintroduce myself!

I’m Dr. Shawn Tassone, but my patients call me Dr. T 👨‍⚕️

Supporting women is my life’s work and something I’m very passionate about.

Many know me as America’s Holistic Gynecologist, but I’m not your average OBGYN. I’m the first physician in America to be double board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology with an emphasis on Integrative Medicine and a PhD in Mind, Body, Medicine.

Since my career began, over 20 years ago, I’ve helped over 50,000 women - listening to their stories with respect and compassion - from various hormone imbalances, menopause, perimenopause, Essure, fibroids, PCOS - you name it.

Shedding an average of 110-120 hairs per day is considered normal. Increases in hair loss have always been stated as stress related, but other hormones, such as testosterone, are responsible for hair growth as well.

Resharing this in light of all the talk about women choosing to get off the birth control pill, such as the recent article by that I’ve already shared my opinion on — feel free to check it out on my profile! 👏

Also, please understand that the menstrual cycle is a vital sign of a woman’s health.

Prescribing birth control and telling women they don’t need to have a period is NOT true and in my opinion, lazy medicine.

These physicians are choosing to mask a problem versus getting to the root of it.

Men need to p**p.
And women need periods.

First thing after good sleep, exercise, nutrition and self care that is 😉

Regardless of what your previous physician, or someone you follow online told you, hormonal imbalances do exist….

Honestly, I’m not sure which is more concerning- the fact there’s physicians telling women that hormone imbalances don’t exist or the fact that there’s women out there who will/are believing them.

Since you’re here, reading this, I want you to know hormone imbalances DO exist….

The mood swings.
The weight changes.
The hair loss.
The fatigue.
The loss of libido.
The desperation for someone who will ACTUALLY help.

It’s all real.

And telling women otherwise is doing them a disservice, negating their symptoms, and doctorsplaining them.

The birth control pill will not ‘fix’ symptoms.
Nor will an antidepressant.
These are simply serving as bandages and women deserve better.

Help me spread the message of truth by sharing this post to inform women that they’re being heard, that there’s doctors like me out there wanting to help them understand their bodies, and also to remind physicians that even if it’s not defined in their textbook doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist 👏

If you don’t feel ‘normal’, chances are you aren’t, you’re simply out of balance.

Don’t accept this as your new normal.

I’m determined to remove the myths surrounding women’s health and empower women around the world, including you reading this!

Empowerment is taking your health into your own hands, for you and your family, but this doesn’t necessarily mean you have to do it alone.

The human body was made to heal itself and I believe the medical model should reflect that with more patient-centered care with an active patient and a passive healer.

Why is it that the medical standard is to allow women to suffer?

Why is it that when women complain of pain many physicians are dismissive?

For example, studies have shown it takes women approximately 18 minutes longer to receive pain medication in comparison to men when presenting in the ER.

I share things like this because it’s more relevant than many of us would like to accept.

Daily I hear from women who feel unsupported or unheard by their physician.

If you’ve expressed concerns and been dismissed by your doctor then I encourage you to find a new one who will actually listen and take your concerns seriously.

Woman. Wife. Mom. Sister. Daughter. Friend.
I hear you.
I see you.
I support you.
You matter.
Your health matters.
Women’s health matters.

Most people tend to think menopause isn’t more than hot flashes and bad moods. No one’s talking about racing hearts, crushing fatigue, dry skin (and va**nas!), and painful s*x.

In fact, women in our society are so unprepared for this transition that almost half don’t know the difference between perimenopause and menopause until they go through it. And even then, almost ¾ don’t talk to their doctors or treat symptoms!

Ladies, you deserve better.

You deserve to understand your bodies. You deserve to understand your options. And you definitely deserve to stop suffering!

You can and should thrive during and after menopause. And when you’re armed with the right information, you can.

Imagine how different your life would’ve been had you been properly informed about the importance of your menstrual cycle when you were younger?

Something as simple as how or why you should track your menstrual cycle?

Or maybe it’s too irregular?

Maybe you could’ve avoided being put on birth control to ‘fix’ your period?

I hate to tell you, but birth control isn’t going to fix your period, knowledge about your body is.

Learning why your period is irregular is the first step, and in a lot of cases hormones are to blame.

This is true even for young woman, but with a physician who has proper hormonal knowledge it can easily be addressed.

Trying to get your hormones sorted but every option seems to break the bank?

It shouldn’t be this way!

You don’t need a fancy test to check hormone levels, although sometimes it’s recommended based on what symptoms or underlying problems we may discover. In most cases blood work, which is covered by insurance, is able to provide accurate results and is more cost effective for you- the patient!

I will mention there are some hormones, like cortisol, which I don’t recommend testing through serum because it’s not accurate. If you’re concerned with cortisol levels then I recommend you order an at home saliva test from somewhere like Amazon and it will be much more cost effective. You can then present those results to your hormone physician to better understand them.

Should women in menopause, surgical or not, cycle progesterone?

Recently I was brought into a discussion regarding this topic so it’s time to set the record straight on progesterone cycling!

The short, simple answer is no, regardless of what some self-proclaimed expert has told you.

There is no evidence to back the claims made by those who suggest progesterone cycling RANDOMLY to ‘mimic’ the natural menstrual cycle except a study done on mice.

Women who undergo removal of the ovaries, also known as an oophorectomy, experience symptoms that are commonly referred to as surgical menopause.

For these women to cycle randomly without the ability to track their cycle, they can potentially select their “random” days to cycle during their follicular phase, a time they shouldn’t have progesterone, and then their body will begin the ovulation phase, which will consist of another ~2 weeks of progesterone meaning they aren’t really cycling the progesterone.

Progesterone, known as the calming hormone, provides many benefits to women, such as mood regulation, increase libido, improve sleep quality, and more.

So why wouldn’t women want the benefits of progesterone daily when it can benefit their longterm health and quality of life?

This is yet another reason why I highly recommend checking the credentials of those you choose to take medical advice from and I will openly debate any of them as they are doing a disservice to women by spreading this misinformation.

There’s two things you shouldn’t worry about while on your period - calories and being called ‘crazy’ due to the fluctuations of your menstrual cycle.

Despite what is commonly portrayed about the menstrual cycle, it’s actually not out to get you every month and discovering the root cause as to why you’re experiencing unfavorable symptoms, such as mood swings, cramping, fatigue, insomnia, migraines (to name a few) during your period can not only help you better understand your body, but also allow you to work with your body to make your period less painful, heavy or even more predictable.

The time you’re on your period is a busy time for your hormones and it’s possible they’re to blame for the fact you dread this time of month.
