received your book today. anxious to read it. funny - the mail-'person' brought it to the door as i had to sign for it. she said," i have no idea what's inside but it reads WMD - all I can think of is Weapons of Mass Destruction". i had a good laugh when i realized what it was. very timely - i'm a leader in our church - heading into a leadership meeting in about an hour to discuss our current prospect - a new building! the focus has been on growth and owning a building rather than leasing. all good stuff, but we're coming out of a difficult time as a church family where growth was certainly not my priority. i've seen a lot of healing in the last few months and realize how long it takes to pursue real estate in this area. i'm thankful for your book and will certainly share any worthwhile feedback. thanks for writing about what seems to be a recurring trend in our society.
Finished the book last week. From someone who lived it as you did only we left way before the explosion. My family continues to bear through unreconciled relationships from Roddy disciples. Some STILL at the Fellowship.

"This book is written to help your church learn from our wrong turns. When we're afraid to speak plainly, openly, transparently, and 'tell it like it is,' we shield ourselves (and others) from any ability to learn from mistakes." -- Ed Francis

The great sickness found in many churches: "Thou Shalt Remain Silent." Why are cults (ut oh, I used the "C word") afraid when you point out what you've read, experienced or learned? Are their responses to protect the man they follow a way of reconciling something within themselves? I think it might be a bit too ear...ly in the morning to ask these questions - but, God loves it when His bride is cared for.

"There are to be no kingpins in the church as Christ is the head of the church, not the Pastor... If your Pastor is an unchallenged kingpin, then your church has become a dead church. The Pastor does not define the church, Christ does!" -- Dr. Ken Matto

04/18/2010

"The function of the Pastor is to be the guardian of the spiritual welfare of the flock in the church. He cannot do this if he is the head of everything which removes attention from the flock." - Dr. Ken Mato

Cullen: The church can't bury the truth It's doubtful the mandarins at the Vatican are shaking in their boots, now that a simple parish priest in Massachusetts has stood in the pulpit and called for Pope Benedict's resignation.

Christian terrorism? http://www.statesman.com/opinion/pitts-accept-the-troubling-truth-539958.html

Pitts: Accept the troubling truth And I suppose the first words should be about "those" words: "Christian terrorism." The term will seem jarring to those who've grown comfortable regarding terrorism as something exclusive to Islam.

"Man in the world of action loses his centering in the principle of eternity if he is anxious for the outcome of his deeds, but resting them and their fruits on the knees of the Living God he is released by them, as by sacrifice, from the bondages of the sea of death." - J.C.

"So much poison in power, the principles get left out. So much mind on the matter, the spirit gets forgotten about." - (Rush) As Christians "doing church," have we forgotten about The Holy Spirit? Are we leaving Jesus' principles out?

"3When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal. 4Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. 5Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts." Who are we following; Christ, or someone else?

Is our faith in God, or in numbers? Is our focus on God, or on numbers? What say we bow down not to cheap gimmicks and tricks but to The Almighty Himself? What do you say?

"Anger and conflict are not the problem; they are normal aspects of life. Abuse doesn't come from people's inability to resolve conflicts but from one person's decision to claim a higher status than another. . . . teaching equality, teaching a deep respect for all human beings -- these are more complicated undertakings..., but they are the ones that count." ~Lundy Bancroft

"...the refusal [of the call] is essentially a refusal to give up what one takes to one's own interest. The figure is regarded not in terms of an unremitting series of deaths and births, but as though one's present system of ideals, virtues, goals, and advantages were to be fixed and made secure." - Joseph Campbell

"The emperor shuddered, for he knew that they were right, but he thought, “The procession must go on!” He carried himself even more proudly, and the chamberlains walked along behind carrying the train that wasn’t there."

03/28/2010

The emperor walked beneath the beautiful canopy in the procession, and all the people in the street and in their windows said, “Goodness, the emperor’s new clothes are incomparable! What a beautiful train on his jacket. What a perfect fit!” No one wanted it to be noticed that he could see nothing, for then it would be said that he was unfit for his position or that he was stupid.

"We can do better -- we must do better. It’s time for us to start thinking. It’s no longer okay to quietly sit in our pews and comfortable chairs while leadership infected with dreams of success set the agenda for our churches. Blindly following has only gotten in the way of seeing what’s most important." WMD

"As a result of growing pressure to attend to the needs of our Purpose-Driven church, the little that remained of our support network eventually vanished. What was left of our group soon disbanded. No support group in place to care for people. All our efforts were directed at survival mode, maintaining what we had b...ecome accustomed to, while sacrificing and forgetting to care for community." WMD

"To challenge the workings of the church was to question our pastor and ultimately God. This would not be tolerated as it would take away our focus on serving -- and serving was everything at The Fellowship. Our church activities became more important than family or other meaningful relationships." - WMD

03/28/2010

" Instead of trusting God for leadership, we were trying to construct a path of our own will and manipulation. The bottom line was we were going to save souls, and if that meant prettying up the packaging and pulling out all the stops, then so be it. So long as we could spiritually justify our actions, the ends justified the means." WMD

03/28/2010

"If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35For whoever wants to save his life[c] will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. 36What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? 37Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul?"

03/27/2010

"Remaining aware and being capable of questioning leaders are key to opening up dynamic dialog and shutting down the sickness. We need to take responsibility for our passivity. However, our ownership of the problem ends when leadership ceases to engage in open, honest, and direct communication." -- WMD

I can get on to RW's page...but he did disable the comment section for me. Is Rick afraid of peolpe knowing about the book? Is it so dangerous? It is kind of sad that someone would block access to information. Let the people decide for themselves weather they want to read it or not? Or is it better to hide it away? I don't know. It is easier that way...
