As children continued to show interest in looking for Coco, the wooly bear caterpillar, we thought of writing a story about Coco as a group. We asked children such questions as, " What did Coco do outside?", "Does Coco have a family?", "What else does Coco do?" We wrote down children's ideas and posted them on the wall. On the table below we arranged a pretend habitat for Coco and his friends. The children started to create and play out their stories about Coco's adventures. Today Coco and his friend Jessica went on a motor boat ride.

Our group has been investigating and learning about holes. Yes, holes! It started when several children found pieces of bark with holes in them (we could peek through!). This generated a lot of excitement and interests among the children, so we decided to study holes. We find holes everywhere! Together we ask, "I wonder who made this hole?" "I wonder what this hole is for?" Take a peek at our discoveries by visiting our Investigating Holes Gallery below. Join us in our investigations by sending us pictures of your discoveries!

Last week one of the children brought a wooly bear caterpillar named Coco to school. We looked at Coco and decided that he would feel more comfortable outside. We gently placed Coco in the grass on our playground. Now every time we go outside we see Coco! He was seen crossing the road, hiding in the grass, and playing with other wooly bears. Where do you think we might find Coco next time?

Russian Math in Hawai‘i

Russian Math Center

We are currently enrolling two groups of children, 5-6 yrs and 7-8 yrs, for summer and fall 2013.

After my son (7) had spent a year at school memorizing number facts, I asked him if the equation 4=2+2 is correct. He said, No way, the bigger number should always come on the right side. I have tested several other children in my son's class and everyone thought the same. Later I found research saying that such rigidity in thinking and misunderstanding of what "=" means prevails among elementary school children in US and that most children (78%) do not develop a clear understanding of mathematical equations and, consequently, fail at understanding algebra and other math later in school.

Russian curriculum in math offers a unique and advanced alternative. Russian math program focuses on early introduction of algebra and logic problems in a very accessible to young children way. The program does not focus on low-order thinking skills (such as calculation) but on the development of logic and higher-order thinking skills developing a solid foundation for success in math. Research has shown that children who complete five years of Russian math curriculum gain a profound, high-school level understanding of algebra and math.

“The aim of the Russian program goes beyond the mathematical development of students, it is ultimately targeted to their cognitive development,” Schmittau, associate professor of education in the School of Education and Human Development at Binghampton State University of New York.
