20-year-old Jaipur girl gets Rs. 2.1 crore offer from Facebook.
Astha Agarwal had no inkling back in 2009 when she signed up as a user on Facebook that she would one day get an offer from it. She had joined FB to keep in touch with people she met in Azerbaijan during the International Junior Science Olympiad, but in May this year, she was at FB headquarters in Menlo Park, California, for summer internship.
After the May-to-July internship, she got the offer to work as a software engineer at FB.
“But it was only recently that I calculated the money in INR and realised mine was the highest among all FB offers,” she says as she shows HT a copy of the offer letter. Astha will join FB in October next year after she completes her eighth semester at Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B).
Astha, 20, is the younger of the two daughters of a Rajasthan Vidyut Prasaran Nigam Limited (RVPNL), a transmission company, executive engineer. She is in Jaipur for her winter vacation.
After the news has got out that she’s got a pre-placement offer from the social media company for Rs. 2.1 crore salary, including sign-on bonus and ESOPs, the phone at the modest Agarwal household in government colony on Sahkar Marg in Jaipur hasn’t stopped ringing.
She got into IIT when her elder sister, Pavitra, graduated from IIT, Delhi as a chemical engineer. She secured all India rank of 90 in IIT-JEE 2011 and joined department of computer science engineering at IIT-B.
However, Astha isn’t as excited about the money as much as she is excited about working for Facebook. “She also got an offer from Google, but she didn’t take it,” her father Ashok Agarwal says.
“As a matter of fact, she hasn’t appeared for any other company during the placements.”
“What I liked about FB was that is has much less employees than Google and it is easier to make an impact with less people around,” she explains why she’s so happy for the offer.
“It’s a start-up kind of a culture, but more than anything, I guess it’s just a matter of choice.” Talking about Zuckerberg, she says she didn’t get a chance to meet him personally during the internship “but I recall from a recent news was that he wears the same t-shirt every day so he doesn’t waste time in deciding what to wear”.
“I think that is something very inspiring and people who complain about lack of time can learn something from this,” she says. Astha is one of the five other IIT-B graduates who have got FB offer: two during pre-placements and three from campus placements.
Astha went to St Xavier’s School in Jaipur and got 98% in Class 12.

Google offers BITS-Pilani students Rs.1.40-crore packages
Campus placements are becoming more and more lucrative with technology and e-commerce players taking the lead over core industries. In the latest round of placements, Google has offered selected BITS-Pilani students an annual package of Rs.1.40 crore each, a tad lower than last year's record of Rs.1.44 crore which was offered to one of the students by Facebook.
The offer came after the first round of placement tests on August 18 at the BITS campus. Google's HR team is expected to visit India early in September to finalise the deals.
With approximately 2,300 BITS students becoming eligible for campus placements, BITS is hoping to break last year's annual package record. In the first two days of the placement interviews, 53 students have already been placed with the highest domestic package of Rs.23.5 lakh.
Microsoft and Schlumberger have also shortlisted students and have offered more than Rs.70-lakh annual packages.

Wish you very Happy Birthday(Lord Krishna)...

Russia Demands Internet Users Show ID to Access Public Wi-Fi-
Russia further tightened its control of the Internet on Friday, requiring people using public Wifi hotspots provide identification, a policy that prompted anger from bloggers and confusion among telecom operators on how it would work.
The decree, signed by Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on July 31 but published online on Friday, also requires companies to declare who is using their web networks. The legislation caught many in the industry by surprise and companies said it was not clear how it would be enforced.
A flurry of new laws regulating Russia's once freewheeling Internet has been condemned by President Vladimir Putin's critics as a crackdown on dissent, after the websites of two of his prominent foes were blocked this year.
Putin, who alarmed industry leaders in April by saying the Internet is "a CIA project", says the laws are needed to fight "extremism" and "terrorism."

Communications Minister Nikolai Nikiforov said that demanding ID from Internet users was normal. "Identification of users (via bank cards, cell phone numbers, etc.) with access to public Wifi is a worldwide practice," he tweeted.
A pro-Kremlin lawmaker said the measure was needed to prevent Cold War-style propaganda attacks against Russia.
"It's about security. An information war is under way. Anonymous access to the Internet in public areas allows illegal activities to be carried out with impunity," Vadim Dengin, deputy chair of parliament's information technology committee, was quoted by state newspaper Izvestia as saying.
Alexei Venediktov, editor of the popular Ekho Moskvy radio, lampooned the decree, saying the government's next step would be to embed a chip in people's chests "to automatically detect potential sellers of information to the enemy."
Unexpected
Industry experts said vague wording in the decree did not define exactly what state who would have to comply with the law or what methods would be needed to authenticate users' identity.
The Communications Ministry said in a statement that a "direct obligation to present identity documents" would only be required at "collective access points" such as post offices where the government provides public access to Wifi.
State newspapers Izvestia and Rossiskaya Gazeta said the law required users to provide their full names, confirmed by an ID, at public Wifi access points including cafes and public parks. The personal data would be stored for at least six months.
An official with the Moscow city government, Artem Yermolaev, said user identification could be carried out by registering a telephone number and receiving Wifi logins by SMS.
Internet companies said they knew little about the new law. "It was unexpected, signed in such a short time and without consulting us," said Sergei Plugotarenko, head of the Russian Electronic Communications Association.
(Also See: eBay Plans to Expand in Russia Despite Sanctions)
The requirement for businesses to declare who was using their Internet networks would be the "biggest headache," he said.
"We will hope that this restrictive tendency stops at some point because soon won't there be anything left to ban."
Another law, which took affect on Aug. 1, requires bloggers with more than 3,000 followers to register with the government and comply with the same rules as media outlets.
Websites are also required to store their data on servers located in Russia from 2016 - a move some believe would cut Russian users off from many international online services.
Of the many challenges of living abroad, culture shock and homesickness are perhaps the easiest to deal with. Things get tougher, though, when it comes to finding one's way about in an alien setting. Tasks that may otherwise seem facile—like where to eat or shop—become serious challenges in a foreign country. What the newly-arrived expat requires is expert guidance, which is just what the developers of 'Chindia Guru'—a smartphone app designed to make life simpler for Chinese nationals living in the NCR area.
The recently-launched application was designed and developed in Gurgaon by members of the Chindia Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI). The developers themselves are Chinese nationals who have been longtime residents in these parts and know the ropes well.
Apart from pointers on the best Chinese restaurants in Gurgaon and grocery stores that stock the favoured goods, the application also provides essential information on where and how Chinese nationals can get a visa, financial and legal services in the NCR.
"The idea is to make the Chinese community's life in India easy," said Amit Li Jian, the secretary general of the CCCI, summing up the main objective of this smartphone application. According to him, there are around 2,000 Chinese nationals living across the NCR, and almost 1,500 of them are based in Gurgaon, working primarily in the telecommunications and power sectors.
"There are three major functions of this app. One is to guide the Chinese nationals on basic points like shopping, traveling and getting apartments and hotels. Second is the commercial part, which deals with connecting users to brands, restaurants and other business services. And finally, it is about community building, helping the Chinese nationals living here connect with each other better," said Jian. The app is updated frequently and has a section where notifications on the latest events and activities of interest to the local Chinese community, are posted.
