In this week's FARM blog, 2020 intern Jody Horton shares everything he has learned so far on JEM Farm with his FARM mentor Elizabeth Malayter. It's amazing how much there is to learn in such a short amount of time. The beauty of farming is that it is a never-ending learning experience.

JEM Farm is an sustainably managed farm (formerly certified organic) growing pasture raised non GMO hogs, rabbits, meat chickens, laying hens and goats.
Organic Eggs and Vegetables. Pastured Goats, cage free chickens and turkeys. Pastured Pigs.

We recently helped a friend with their whole hog BBQ ❤️
Get ready for tho cold and nasty weather means finding hay…. We might be doing the hay project tomorrow.

There are new children, oops, piglets, at the farm. This younger mama has been hiding them for the last several days. I would say they were born this past Friday. We were on baby watch, but she was sneaky and had her babies in an unexpected spot…. Not sure how many boys and girls right now.

I am not sure I can send messages or respond to the in box anymore. I have tried to fix it, but…. You know, FB! If you need me, please use the e-mail at [email protected]! Thank you!

Not the greatest picture, but here is the big girl in the jewelw**d. I tried to add the little video, but it did not take 🤷🏼♀️
Praying Mantis
I am a horrible video person, but this is the big female in the jewelw**d.

Added picture from the cabin porch.
I saw the gigantic green praying mantis agin today in the jewel w**d. She seems bigger, I wonder if I will soon find egg cases ❤️

These may be my only Maypops as I see no more flowers- lots of vines, but no more Passion flowers.

Apios americana, or the American ground nut, is finally living here ❤️❤️❤️

Found the elderberry motherload. I already have about 3 lbs in the freezer, and my local honey is purchased, so syrup time is coming.

Late boneset pictures. It is a very nice plant.

Frost flower, black eyed susans, and the pod of the native milkw**d.

No monarchs, but the Queen of the Meadow attracts other creatures…

These very friendly grow outs are looking for new homes. They are all over 5 lbs at about 15 weeks. Love to be petted, not so keen on being picked up right now. I can meet locally.

These little guys are almost ready to leave their mom!

Young grow outs coming along!

This is the fat litter! All solid, either grey or black. One black baby is not huge, but all of the bellies are so round ❤️

These little grow outs are getting much bigger 😁 and of course eating like little horses! My hand is there for a little perspective. One of the two color babies is grey and white, there is one solid black and one solid grey 🤷🏼♀️

Finally seeing the bee balm Sarah Bush gave me last year. And the tansy is blooming- old fashioned shoo fly plant. Good for goats to eat because it is high in tannins.

The humming birds have found the gladiolus! Walk down the pathway to get dive bombed😝. Now I really want more colors 💐

For Melanie Teegarden. More jewelw**d photos.

Not actually camping in Hawkins County - Tiny houses for Rent in Rogersville, Tennessee, United States
Our AirBNB cabin has had a cancellation (folks moving into our area were able to get into their house earlier than they anticipated) and we have room for you to hide out here with us. It is sticky outside, but if you are adventurous you can make s’mores on the fire pit, grill out and enjoy the deck, hang out with dogs and cats, ducks and geese.

Calendula Autumn lights from Botanical Interests. Small pollinators are loving this. And I am seeing a few honey bees.

It finally happened! Rain please😳 Our water bill will be horrible!

We have new bacon seeds in the field. Possibly from day before yesterday, but definitely in the field yesterday. There are nine of these large breed nuggets.

Glads are coming ❤️❤️❤️ Does any one know if these lovely red lilies set seeds or anything else? They do seem to make baby plants. Closer up view of the double day lilies.

Native milkw**d is blooming. I collect the seed pods and break them into wild areas on the property. We have more than we used to…

The three younguns together. About a month apart, but they pretty much think they are siblings ❤️

Red nannie and her daughter ❤️

Sydney and her kids. Really doing well ❤️

I forgot to take a picture of the over achiever mom, but here are her buns. And as you might guess, she is a fully black mama. We got lots of pretty blue babies :)

Yesterday, this mama successfully kindled. Emma said there were 8, but I really think there are more. They had spread themselves all over the nesting box for temp control.

Summer flowers blooming now. I know they are all so common, but they really thrill me. This summer I have had the opportunity to plant baby trees, canna lilies, day lilies, irises (Siberian and bearded), torch lilies (AKA red hot poker plants), hosta, a new lilac, American beauty berry, water iris in new places, peonies. If I can actually keep water to each area, I will be in good shape.

The newest farm dog napping. He makes it to about 11:30 AM each day…

This is the color 😍

Summer blooms, but there are more on the way ❤️

Early summer, most just about to bloom…. Lantana is marketed here blooming. I know some local folks have been able to get it to overwinter, but not here 😞 I get new each spring.

There is a new little farm resident. Emma has decided to call him Moose. Very calm for an 8/9 week old baby 🥰

The freezer is full 🐔🐓
