At approximately 7:16 this morning a 911 call came into the Franklin County Sheriff's office for the report of a Structure fire in the Fork Mountain are of the County. Departments from Fork Mountain Volunteer Fire Department, Rocky Mount Fire Department, Glade Hill Volunteer Fire Department, Callaway Volunteer Fire Department, Boones Mill Volunteer Fire/EMS, Henry Volunteer Fire Dept., Snow Creek Volunteer Fire Department and Ferrum Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to assist with Fire fighting operations and Water hauling. Franklin County Fire & EMS was also on scene and began fire operations when shortly there after a call came over the radio for a partial building collapse as well as an injured firefighter. Medics from Squad 2 immediately tended to the FF and he was transported by ground to a local hospital. We are happy to announce that he has since been released and is at home where he will be recovering for the next several weeks. We want to thank everyone for their calls, text, thoughts and prayers today. We are very thankful for our staff as well as our wonderful volunteers that serve this county. We would like to Thank Boones Mill Volunteer Fire/EMS for inviting us to be a part of the Field day at Boones Mill Elementary School. The kids loved the fire trucks as well as getting wet. What a wonderful event for the kids and a great way to be involved in the community!
Our thoughts and Prayers are with Pastor Troy Keaton and the families, church members and community of Eastlake Community Church. Thank you to all of the first responders from Bedford, Franklin, Roanoke, Lynchburg and surrounding counties tonight. Many of our friends were at the event tonight and we continue to lift them up as well. Tonight we are all EASTLAKE.

Receiving a helmet shield is a significant milestone in a firefighter’s career, symbolizing their official identity, rank, and the successful completion of training or a probationary period. It represents their formal acceptance into the fire service community and the responsibility they have earned. This past week I had the opportunity to watch FF/Medic Rachel Horkey perform her duties and she was nothing less than impressive!!! Congratulations Rachel on your new shield we are so very proud of you. Keep up the good work! Callaway Volunteer Fire Department I would have loved to had your tones set off and made this announcement but ….. here it is! Ladies and gentlemen of the Callaway Fire Dept. Congratulations on over 60 years of service. You see what James and Dot Webb begun started way before those 60 years. A passion built up inside their bones to serve others and to love their neighbor as their self. Over the years I have had the opportunity to serve along side of, break bread with, and even share in the grief of loss with my brothers and sisters at the Callaway Fire Dept. These are some of the finest and simplest people that you will ever meet. Ranging from cattle farmers to office personnel, to VDOT workers and all other walks of life. Today you had a celebration, a time to come together and recognize the years of service that so many of you have put in. On behalf of the office of Fire Ems, the citizens of Callaway, and the greater citizens of Franklin County we say thank you. Thank you for your years of dedication, your sacrifice, your missed meals with family, and for the love and compassion that you have shown your neighbor and time of need. James and Dot are some of the sweetest people that you will ever meet and although he turned over the reins this year, James Webb, you will always be chief five to me! Although I was not able to attend today’s event in person because of other obligations, I want to publicly thank you for all that you have done for your community! CO. 5 members continue to carry the torch that burns bright into the future, and don’t forget the importance of breaking bread together and spending time together in that little piece of heaven, we know as Callaway, Virginia! God bless you all, and I look forward to serving alongside of you for many years to come! Your friend PS – 29
