93 points by Wine Spectator!

"They say I pick early. I say they pick late."

Gran Moraine Winery winemaker Shane Moore brings a unique approach to harvesting their pinot noir - an approach learned from working harvests all over the world for more than a decade before joining Gran Moraine. Shane attributes early harvesting at their Yamhill-Carlton location necessary to achieve the tension and energy that makes their wine so special.
The 2019 Gran Moraine Yamhill-Carlton Pinot Noir has lively acidity upfront with energetic and youthful tannin structure and a long dark fruit-driven finish.
Notes of tangerine, pomegranate, sassafras, saffron, pipe to***co, spruce tips, and Himalayan blackberry

This week we explore Alta Alella · Celler de les Aus Bruant Cava Brut Nature 2017.
Bruant is a spontaneously fermented Spanish sparkling wine produced from 100% organic Pansa Blanca (aka Xarel-lo) grapes. Bruant is left unfiltered with only naturally occuring sulfites.
Bruant is unique with a rich palate displaying notes of honey, bread dough, baked apple, pear, and almond. Citrus accents bring a lively touch with refreshing carbonation.
Celler de les Aus names their natural wines and cavas after the birds that reside in and around their estate located in the heart of the Serralada de Marina’s Natural Park - just outside of Barcelona.

Our front parking lot is getting a refresh, but we are definitely OPEN! Just follow Ashwin Blvd around the back and park on the East side of the building. It’s a nice day for a short walk!

🍷You’re JUSTIN time for National Red Wine Day🍷

Here are some interesting things you may or may not know about red wine:

🍇 Red wine gets its color strictly from color pigment in its skin. All grape juice is clear, but extended contact with the skin during the winemaking process influences the end color.

🍇 Because all grape juice is clear, white wine can be made from red grapes. The most famous example of this is 🍾Champagne🍾, in which two of the three main varietals used are red: Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier!

🍇 Red grapes are older than white grapes! Because almost all grape varietals used to make traditional wine extend from the same species, Vitis Vinifera, white or light-colored grapes are simply a DNA mutation from red or darker-colored varieties that preceded them.

🍇 Red wine is 'healthier' than white wine. Tannins are naturally occurring compounds in grape skins/seeds/stems that have many antioxidant and antiseptic properties with a host of health benefits. Since red wine is created by skin (and in turn seed/stem) contact, tannins hitch a ride. Tannins create the 'dry' sensation in your mouth when drinking a red wine (some varietals have higher levels than others: Cabernet Sauvignon > Pinot Noir). Tannins also have preservative properties that allow many red wines to be age worthy.

Cambria Winery 2019 Julia's Vineyard Pinot Noir displays pomegranate, dried cranberries, and tart cherry. Spice notes and earthiness compliment the balanced tannins that add structure and a long finish to the wine.
Founded in 1986 by Barbara Banke and Jess Jackson as one of the first wineries in the Santa Maria Valley, Cambria is women owned, women led, and women produced.

Julia's Vineyard is named for Jess and Barbara's daughter Julia who, along with her sister Katherine, runs Cambria with general manager Denise Shurtleff and head winemaker Jill Russell.
All Cambria wines are single vineyard expressions, sustainably farmed, and Estate grown and bottled.

Our latest barrel pick comes to us from Barrell Craft Spirits and is unlike any of our previous selections. This is our first barrel to combine our love of whiskey and wine!

A blend of 14-year Kentucky light whiskey, 18-year Kentucky corn whiskey, with both Indiana and Kentucky rye and bourbon were finished in a single Hungarian Tokaji wine barrel, then bottled at cask strength (126 proof).

For the whiskey itself, aromas of honey, toffee, Mandarin oranges, peaches, and lilac lead the way. A combination of fresh cut lumber and dark charred oak deliver plenty of wood character. Rye and cinnamon spice shine as well. On the palate, a rich oily texture immediately coats the palate, showcasing flavors of citrus, molasses, honey, and caramel. Cinnamon, nutmeg, espresso, light smoke, and spicy rye linger on the back end. The elegance of flavors is so impressive, especially at 126 proof. The heat of this barrel is restrained and adds layers of depth that keep you enjoying sip after sip.

For this pick we were approached to split this single barrel with The Distance Social, a great whiskey and craft cocktail lounge in Dundee, IL. After tasting it, we knew we could not pass up this opportunity!

It's Wine Wednesday with Good Day Stateline! Our wine of the week is GREYWACKE 2021 Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.
Quintessentially Marlborough, but a deliciously subtle, ripe interpretation of the classic style with notes of ripe peach, poached yellow pears, rock melon, apple blossom, and lemon sherbet.
Succulent and crisp, with a
delicate fennel-like herbal quality and a dry, textural palate.
