During my excursion through Sunset Park this morning I saw a group of young kids picking up trash. I stopped to talk to them and found out they were there with Project Renewal who had teamed up with Living Lands and Waters to provide environmental education and fun outings along the river.

Thanks to the kids for their hard work and to Lichen H. of Project Renewal and Mike L. from Living Lands and Waters for coordinating and bringing the kids out!

Stuck at the Government bridge again? Residents of river towns like ours in the Quad Cities get a front‑row seat to the Mississippi River transportation system every day. Sure, it can be annoying — anyone who’s been late to work because the bridge had to open for a barge knows the feeling — but if you pause for a moment, you start to appreciate the engineering happening right in front of you.

The next time you’re held up by a passing barge, take a minute to watch the whole operation. It’s a surprisingly impressive process, and honestly, pretty fun to witness.

This past week we lost our friend Jon Wille after a courageous battle with illness. Jon was a son, a brother, a husband, a father, and a friend whose presence shaped everyone around him. His impact on the BMX community runs deep — he mentored countless riders, from freestylers to racers, helping them push their limits and master truly rad skills.

His family’s backyard bike park became nothing short of legendary, a place where riders learned, progressed, and felt at home.

Last night at East Moline BMX Speedway, we honored Jon in our own way — taking a lap together, riders launching into some sweet jumps in his memory. It was a tribute worthy of the joy and energy he brought to the sport and to all of us.
