Please help: I know alpacas are adorable, that’s why I have a herd! I love love love them dearly! But I must share about this video of Alfie the alpaca going around the internet. We raise alpacas, and I can tell you that this situation is a very very very bad situation! In all likelihood because of the incorrect interference of humans, this alpaca will have to be killed when he becomes an adult. Let me explain.
1. Alpacas are herd animals and they do not like to be alone, the stress from just being without another alpaca can cause serious illnesses and even death. We recommend that you have no fewer than three alpacas in your herd.
2. Excessive handling, cuddling, loving on a young male alpaca has dire consequences when their hormones kick in. He will most likely see this owner as a fellow male alpaca. Because of this, he must establish dominance in the herd as an adult and he will bite him, angrily neck wrestle him, mount him shove him on the ground and even stomp on him.Alpacas have curving fighting teeth that male alpacas use to rip the sc***um from another male alpaca. They are solid muscle. I have seen a 150 pound male alpaca literally lift my 280 lb. husband off of his feet and throw him in the air. Now in this instance it was not done in anger, my husband happened to be leaning over his back when my alpaca got extremely frightened and lept into the air, imagine what damage he could do if he was trying to challenge my husband for leader of the pack. They are not mean animals at all! It is just part of their nature to establish dominance just like a dog pack would do. Could you imagine the dire consequences if you taught an 8 week old Rottweiler that it was OK and rewarded the Rottweiler to growl at humans? He would grow up to be a very dangerous 175 lb dog and it would not be the dog’s fault at all!!
3. While we do love and pet our adult alpacas, some don’t really like it. They are animals of prey and it takes a long time to let them understand you are not hunting them. Some do but some never do. You must understand that it is not the norm for them to be cuddly so if you buy a cria (baby), it will not most likely be like a cuddly dog. Many new owners get them from un-reputable owners and then the new owners only to want to dump them when they aren’t cuddly. Then they fall prey to coyotes and wild dogs. It’s a death sentence.
4. There is another viral video of a young lady by a fence with a brown alpaca coming up behind her and making a noise. She laughs about it and thinks it is cute. She comes back day after day with the same response. This alpaca likely was brought up in a similar scenario as above. He is not making sweet noises to her. He is making mating noises (a soft hum is a sweet noise) he believes humans are mate-able. This can also dangerous because should he become determined enough he can take the fence down and she’d be in trouble. I’ve tried to pull off a determined male from his advances to the wrong female... I am incapable of doing it by myself most of the time.
5. Alpacas who are not over-handled like this grow up to be very gentle, sweet, respectful animals. Alpacas can be the most beautiful, peaceful and wonderful livestock but they are still that ... livestock and it’s in their best interest not make them into pets.
Because we love alpacas, please share this everywhere.
