Tail of the Dragon

Tail of the Dragon

Is Foothills Parkway closed at 129 this weekend?
leave, please
Is there any shops nearby there that sell motorcycle gear (helmets, suits, boots, things like that)besides Knoxville cycle gear?
Bargain Miata hilll climbs and...peach trees?

I picked up an absolute bargain of a Miata yesterday to use as a daily be**er here on the Tail of the Dragon. It's a '97 that runs and drives, with a mere 193k on the odometer, and a lightweight (15 lb) racing hardtop. Miata prices have been skyrocketing lately, so what would have been a $500 car a few years ago now seems like a steal at $1900. No immediate plans for domination or improbable engine swaps, just paint and flog while saving on fuel. It is definitely a FUN car to hoon up our 2100' gravel driveway!!

My plan for the hill above the new #SpeedycopShop has been to turn it into an orchard. I caught a 50% off sale at a local farmer's co-op today, and bought 64 healthy peach, apple, pear, nectarine, and plum trees for prices ranging from $11 to $13.50 each.

Millions of peaches, peaches for me.

Next up: Installing 100' of trench drain, and wiring the shop. Apparently a roll of electrical wire is more valuable than the Hope Diamond these days, so this is gonna be painful...
Ten years ago today was my first visit to the Tail of the Dragon! I've been back at least another half dozen times since then and loved it every time!

Wow ! I been there and done that ! More than
Once!! Enjoyed so much !!! Love all the pictures!
Keep sending more pic ! Can’t catch all the action
and activities. Have fun be careful!!!
First look at the 2100' driveway up our 20+ acre #privatemountain to the new #SpeedycopShop and our beautiful new home! The house is almost complete, and we're hoping to be in it in a few weeks. That 1403 square feet is gonna feel like the Taj Mahal after a year and a half of living in a camper!

And yes, the neighbor's miniature horses and donkey are very friendly. The free petting zoo was a value-added bonus! Our land starts at the top of their pasture. When we bought the land in October of 2020, there wasn't even a passable driveway. It's been a lot of work and far too expensive building in this economy, but we're almost there...

Tickets available here: https://www.stecoahvalleycenter.com/events.html

Then be sure to make time to explore the Native Flame Azaleas blooming atop Hooper Bald just off the Cherohala Skyway. Be sure to bring your phone/camera! It's an awesome, short hike with tons of photo ops.

Alrighty, y'all. We're taking it way back today and we hope you'll join us.

So, when is the first time you visited the Tail of the Dragon? How old were you? What were you driving? Extra credit: drop a photo below.

Group travel season is officially here! So, here are a few reminders:

What kind of groups visit the Dragon? The three largest rallies (500 plus) are the Minis (April), Zdayz (May), and Miatas (August). There are many other nearby rallies in Cherokee and Maggie Valley. Nearby Pigeon Forge in Tennessee hosts several large antique car rallies each year. See EVENTS page for complete list: https://tailofthedragon.com/events/

If you see an event posted, don't stop from planning a trip. Most of the groups that visit Tail of the Dragon are small, informal gatherings of car or motorcycle groups. The rallies include a wide range of vehicles from MoPeds to supercars.

All of these rallies are planned, organized and conducted by private individuals or groups. TailoftheDragon.com simply acts as a place to list the events and spread the word. We have no specific part in any of the events except to provide a place for attendees to meet.

What can Tail of the Dragon provide for your group? We can post notice of your event to help attract other interested parties. We can make custom group signs, free stickers, and provide use of our graphics for event T-shirts or brochures. We can provide a location for scavenger hunts or poker runs. CONTACT US to make arrangements.

Are you ready to negotiate the curves? Our number one piece of advice is to STAY IN YOUR LANE and that doesn't mean hugging the double yellow. Before your visit, read our advice found on How to Ride the Dragon and How to Drive the Dragon.

Don't rely on cell phone service in the mountains. Verizon has the best coverage near populated areas.

We recommend carrying a GPS location device such as the SPOT or the Garmin inReach These devices allow you to share your location with family and friends and also gives you an SOS to emergency services, regardless of cell phone service. If riding alone this could save your life. There have been a number of cases where rider/drivers went off the road and were not found for days or even weeks. Many locations here are remote and not heavily traveled. Tell someone each day where you plan to ride. Keep in touch with loved ones so they don't call us in a panic looking for you.
