When audiences hear the phrase “miscast show,” they often imagine a simple musical r***e. Performers step up to a microphone, sing a song traditionally associated with a character they would never be cast as, and then make way for the next performer. While that format can be entertaining, it rarely offers much in the way of storytelling.

Act Out Enrichment’s The Miscast Show, which opens June 12 at The Box Theatre in Riverside, takes a far more ambitious approach.

Riverside City College’s production of As You Like It does more than stage one of William Shakespeare’s most beloved comedies. Under the direction of Jason Buuck, the production transforms Landis Performing Arts Center into an intimate Forest of Arden where audiences become participants in the story itself.

Some pairings just make sense.

Peanut butter and jelly. Dice and dragons. IPA and barbecue.

We stopped by Carbon Nation Brewing and made a very good decision: a fresh, juicy IPA paired with Big G’s BBQ. One bite of that Mac Daddy sandwich and suddenly any plans you had for eating light today are gone.

Carlos from Big G’s is serving up smoky, messy, glorious barbecue, and Carbon Nation is pouring the perfect beers to go with it. Grab some friends, claim a table, order something that requires extra napkins, and make an evening of it.

It’s Friday! Throw caution to the wind and come down, have a couple beers and put Carlos’ delicious meat in your mouth.

Political satire rarely worries about subtlety, and Damian Alejandro Arteaga’s Super Duper Happy Immigrant Funtime Land has no interest in being subtle. Presented as part of Full Circle Players’ Emerging Voices Festival and directed by Steve Llamas, the play embraces absurdity, dark humor, and biting social commentary to examine immigration, assimilation, and the ways marginalized communities are often reduced to stereotypes for commodification and public consumption.
