She was carried across the paddock looking more like a medium sized dog than a foal. Her body was so swollen that she had tiny slits for eyes and her limbs looked like tree trunks. Rio Rancho and Surrounding Areas: Leadership Opportunities for Older Teens and Young Adults!

Do you know of a 15-22 year old ready to take on leadership roles?

The Giving Reins Leadership Program at Penny Lane Foal Rescue is an internship for personal, professional and educational growth, and work readiness training for 15-22 year olds. It is initiated by the participant. The program is supported by the HHC Wild Horse Capacity Grant and has requirements to be fulfilled.

The most recent report card and/or resume needs to be submitted with the interest email by the individual. Depending on GPA, at least 1, but preferably 2 letters of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, employer, or community leader are required. An in-person interview is held, after the email with the required documents are received, going over program expectations, as well as goals and interests of the participants.

There is a weekly commitment at the facility of a minimum of 4 hours per week, each quarter, usually 2 hours twice weekly, although there may be some flexibility of particular days. Those hours may include mentoring younger Horse Leaders on Saturday mornings, doing projects at the facility, helping socialize and train the horses in preparation for Equine Assisted Learning sessions with youth, educational awareness on social media, and/or assisting with maintaining the facility.

Requirements: Reliable transportation, willingness to adhere to a minimum of 4 hour per week commitment, the ability to work with minimal to moderate independence, ability to follow multi-step directions, good follow through, a strong work ethic, ability to get along supportively with humans and animals, and a positive, can-do attitude are required.

Additionally, there is a social media component to participating in the Giving Reins Leadership Program that may include posts, blogs, videos, podcasts, or any type of educational awareness that promote Mustang adoptions, the ongoing wellbeing of wild horses on public lands, and equine welfare in NM. Giving Reins Leaders are required to educate the public about the positive attributes of Mustangs, educate the public about humane training including what it takes to create lasting bonds with Mustangs, and/or encourage future adoptions of the thousands of wild horses rounded up off of public land giving them safe, healthy homes with humans out in the community.

Empowerment Awards:
Each quarter, the Giving Reins Leader can apply for an Empowerment Award of $100 that goes directly towards the passion projects and personal, educational, and career development of our participants. If the Giving Reins Leader fulfills a 1 year commitment, without requesting quarterly Awards, they may qualify for a $500 Empowerment Award that goes directly towards their advancement of skills, learning, and passion projects. Additionally, Giving Reins Leaders gain leadership and work readiness skills, self-confidence, maintain a cloud based portfolio of accomplishments for future employment and educational pursuits, and are provided professional references from Penny Lane Foal Rescue directors and adult volunteers, all in preparation for excelling in academic settings, the workplace, and in life!

If you know of any 15-22 year olds in the Rio Rancho or surrounding areas who may be interested in participating in the Giving Reins Leadership Program, the first step will be for them to gather their most recent report card/unofficial transcripts/ or resume, include 1-2 letters of recommendation from a teacher-counselor-community leader stating that they are able to fulfill the requirements listed above, and send them through email at [email protected], with a request for an interview.

While parents and guardians may be able to assist in gathering the pre-interview information and make the personal commitment to transport them to Penny Lane each week for the required 4 hours, the internship will need to be the teen’s and young adult’s journey of growth and personal development. It is their commitment to make and fulfill.
