Well, I did a thing today. Several things, in fact. I'm now at The Odd Studio as Witch Crafted, making things again.

What am I making? Well, today I made a bunch of earrings, and tomorrow I'm making some little terrarium bottle necklaces and a few tiaras. I'll make more knit-wire stuff and paint some more angels and get back into making skirts and stuff again.

Don't worry, I still have my day job and I'm still writing. But this feels... Pretty damn good. 💕

The Vampire Chronicles was one of my very first literary obsessions. I was 18 or 19, still very fresh and tender, still a romantic, and Lestat was my first book boyfriend. I'm sure many of us can say the same. How often did I stare wistful at the night sky, wishing he was real enough to pluck me from the mortal coil and join him in the eternal hunt for the evildoers? How often and repeatedly did I read through the Chronicles until the books fell apart in my hands? To this day, I can recite the descent of vampires from Akasha to Mona Mayfair and I'm not sorry I know that information.

Ah, youth.

She pushed me as a writer and I never even met her. Any time I felt dry or useless or blocked, all I had to do was read through Lestat or QotD again, and somehow the words just tumbled out of me. The Mayfair Witches taught me how the threads of a story weave together. Sleeping Beauty taught me how to take a character through pain and torment and see them change on the other side of it. Louis and Lestat taught me how to take a character through pain and torment and see them stay the same. Every written tragedy is a real one to a reader, and she taught me how to break my readers' hearts.

But she gave us so much more than an unforgettable group of vampires, and the Mayfair witches (I know their rather vertical family tree, too), and the Sleeping Beauty series. She gave us more than her masterful storytelling and flowing prose. She taught us that it was okay to be who we were, that life happens outside the box, that sexuality and spirituality can be embraced simultaneously. In recent years we've been looking for any reason to demonize her (granted, she deserved a little bit of it 😆), but the truth is that she blazed a trail for women writers and horror writers for decades to come. We owe her so much.

Thank you, Anne. For everything.

My daddy left this world in the early morning of August 9, 2020. It's been a difficult month. Yesterday we laid him to rest with his mother. It's always seemed like a cliche to say things like "he lives in in our hearts" or whatever, but I truly feel like that's what he's doing now. I thank all of my readers for their kind patience while my socials have been relatively silent this month, and I hope I can get back to a semblance of normalcy soon. 🖤
