**************** ACTION ALERT **************
URGENT HELP NEEDED TO GET ALLY'S ACT, H.R. 477 A HEARING THIS YEAR!

Please help us get Ally's Act, H.R. 477 a hearing this year! We are asking that the following Representatives be emailed and called during June, July and August. We need to create some more traffic through their offices asking them to co-sponsor Ally's Act, H.R. 477!

The attachments include each Congressman's contact information to email and call along with what to say! Please, if you have a loved one or know someone who wears a bone anchored hearing system or cochlear implant, we need Ally's Act to pass! This bill's services would cost private insurers less than 2.25 cents per person/per month and would allow the 350,000 children and adults who are often denied and overlooked by their private insurers for these hearing devices access to life changing treatment, so they can thrive in the community, participate in the workplace and enjoy a high quality of life.

Thank you everyone for your much needed help! Please get the word out and share this information!

Congratulations to audiology alumn Dr. Susan Von Dollen! Dr. Von Dollen is the The American Academy of Audiology's April 2022 spotlighted volunteer.

Dr. Von Dollen began volunteering with the Student Academy of Audiology during her time at UW-Madison, and now she is a member of AAA's Continuing Education Committee. Great work, Susan!
Thank you to Abigail Simon and Shannon Culbertson for advocating for Ally's Act, H.R. 477 today with Congresswoman Rep. Rep. Debbie Dingell (Michigan) and healthcare legislative assistant Timothy Huebner!

Both, Abby and Shannon are audiology students at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Ally's Act will help their future patients who require cochlear implants and bone anchored hearing aids. In fact, Shannon Culbertson wears a bone anchored hearing aid and she was just denied by her private insurance provider for an new hearing device. Shannon's private insurer is not only denying her the right to hear with a hearing device, but is getting in the way of her career and her ability to help other community members hear as an audiologist with hearing loss. It is not okay for insurance companies to deny our children and adults the right to hear by choosing to not cover bone anchored hearing aids and cochlear implants when these individuals are paying into the insurance premiums. It is also not acceptable for private insurers to override the professional medical opinion of our doctors stating these hearing devices are not medically necessary when they absolutely are!

Thank you again to Abby and Shannon for their advocacy today - not just for themselves and their patients, but for our children and adults who require the use of these implantable hearing devices now and in the future! 👂❤️💪❤️🦻

Student Academy of Audiology at USA

Engage, Empower, Lead

The SAA was founded in 2009 after NAFDA (National Association of Future Doctors of Audiology) approached the AAA for support. Various professional healthcare organizations have affiliated student institutions, such as the American Medical Association-Medical Student Section (AMA-MSS) as well as the American Psychological Association (APA), the American Dental Association (ADA), the American Nurses Association (ANA), and the American Veterinary Association (AVA). All have student sections that work together with the parent organization to achieve common goals. In October 2008, Dr. Brian Vesely, the former NAFDA President, and Dr. Patrick Feeney, the former AAA President, signed an agreement that merged NAFDA into the AAA’s student organization, the Student Academy of Audiology (SAA). The ultimate goal of the merger was to maintain an independent student voice, while maximizing the opportunities that come with joining the AAA.

The Student Academy of Audiology (SAA) is the national student division of the American Academy of Audiology (AAA) that serves as a collective voice for students and advances the rights, interests, and welfare of students pursuing careers in audiology. The SAA introduces students to lifelong involvement in activities that promote and advance the profession of audiology and provides services, information, education, representation, and advocacy for both the profession and consumers of audiology services. The SAA has over 2,000 members, consisting of students enrolled in AuD, PhD, post-baccalaureate, undergraduate, or other accredited audiology doctoral programs for a professional degree in audiology.
