For the final day of Mission Space, students built a package to contain and successfully land a raw egg, unbroken from a fall to the ground.
The Curiosity rover is on Mars, studying the Martian climate and geology and looking for substances associated with life. Curiosity is the size of a small car. It is so big and heavy that it couldn’t use an airbag-landing system. Instead, it used a rocket-propelled sky-crane that lowered it gently to the surface. Three other Mars missions used balloon-landing systems: Mars Pathfinder and the two Mars Exploration Rovers (Spirit and Opportunity).
The students were given a variety of materials that they could use to build their egg landers and given only one direction, the egg had to be able to “breathe”. They set to the task quickly and came up with many different designs. After everyone had constructed their lander, we dropped them off the top of a ladder!
Did you know that dinosaur names have meaning? "Discovering Dinosaurs and Fossils" explored more and you can try the activity at home too!
"In the last class this semester, the students learned about how dinosaurs get their names. They analyzed the Greek and Latin meanings of common dinosaur names and learned that scientific names are used so that scientists from all over the world can communicate about them. For example, Tyrannosaurus rex is named from the Greek words meaning “tyrant” and “lizard” and the Latin word for “king”. The students then came up with a name for their own imaginary dinosaur using Greek and Latin words and drew a picture of it, indicating its key features and behavior. They let their imaginations run wild and enjoyed being creative!"
