Air Quality Alert for Thursday, June 8 🚨
Due to the wildfires in Canada, an air quality alert has been issued for today, Thursday, June 8. The air quality is unhealthy for everyone in Fairfax County and the region.
Air quality levels are expected to change over the next several days, so stay informed: https://www.airnow.gov/?city=Fairfax&state=VA&country=USA
➡️ Wildfire Smoke Safety Tips
Wildfire smoke is a mix of gases and fine particles from burning trees and plants, buildings, and other material. Wildfire smoke can make anyone sick, but people with asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), or heart disease are more likely to experience health effects of smoke. Pregnant women, babies and children are also at risk.
Take steps to limit your exposure. For example:
✔️ Spend more time indoors, where particle pollution levels are usually lower.
✔️ Consider moving outdoor and physical activities indoors or rescheduling them.
✔️ Choose easier outdoor activities (like walking instead of running) so you don’t breathe as hard and keep those outdoor activities short.
➡️ Health Department Actions and Advice
Our Health Department is monitoring visits to emergency departments and urgent care centers to assess whether there is an increase in asthma visits with the poor air quality. In the meantime, we encourage people with chronic conditions to protect their health. See this advice from CDC:
