"You train, you work hard and do your job. God has his plan and whatever it is, good or bad, is going to happen, so we don't worry about it.

We just go run barrels." -Mary Burger.

This horse and I have had more ups and downs than I can count. He didn’t come to me with the best headspace, but one thing about him, he has always tried his heart out for me even when things were hard.

It’s taken a long time to get where we are now, and we’re still nowhere near finished. There have been so many rides where I left frustrated, defeated, questioning if I was helping or hurting our progress. I got so scared to change even the smallest thing because what if that didn’t work either?

But THIS video reminded me why you keep trying. This was his first time adding any real speed going to the right first instead of the left, and for the first time in a while, it felt like something clicked instead of crumbled.

Sometimes the smallest adjustment is the missing piece. Sometimes progress doesn’t look flashy for a long time. Sometimes it looks like rebuilding trust one ride at a time.

Don’t give up on them, and don’t give up on yourself either. Reach out for help when you hit a wall. Take lessons from people who know the sport. Ask questions. Learn new things. There is absolutely no shame in needing another set of eyes or another approach. You can never stop learning in this sport.

These horses don’t need perfection from us. They need patience, consistency, and someone willing to keep showing up for them. 🤍

I’m sharing this because of several things I’ve seen across different platforms over the last few weeks that have really stood out to me. This is meant to be educational and clarifying—not critical or directed at any one rider or group.

✨Where it can be helpful to offer guidance is in how we present results.✨⬇️
In barrel racing, context matters. A posted “1D time” doesn’t always tell the whole story unless it includes the number of entries, the payout structure, and the division being run. A fast time in a smaller field where only first pays in each D can still be a win worth celebrating—but it’s not the same experience as earning that same placing in a deep, competitive open race. Both have value; they’re just different stages of the journey.
The same applies when labeling a horse as a “1D horse” or saying you’re “running with the big dogs.” Those descriptions are best earned through consistent results over time, across multiple associations and events, and against solid competition—not just by choosing races where the odds are in your favor. A few 1D placings are a great sign of potential, but they’re part of the process, not the final definition.

Being young, new, or staying local isn’t a disadvantage—it’s where everyone starts. Sharing wins with honesty and transparency helps others understand what real progression looks like and keeps expectations healthy for both horses and riders.

This is shared with respect for the sport and the people in it—not to stir debate or point fingers. My hope is simply to encourage clarity, learning, and integrity as we all continue to grow.
on.
Be there to support everyone big or small , give proper information with full context to what’s going on not just the parts that make you look cool.
We post the good the bad and the ugly around here - to help others see that a downed barrel happens , a wide turn happens , we’re human and they are horses it’s not always going to be perfect❤️
