Creative Cartography

While hiking one day a group stopped to ask me for directions. Google maps was down. I grabbed my map. They said they had never seen a real map before.

What? How is this possible? So I include a map and a history lesson into every piece. ๏ฟฝ

Did you know paper maps can be used to not only help you learn important navigation skills but they help your brain grow? It's true, reading a map opens new cognitive pathways and facilitates skill development. Letโ€™s take a deeper look into how maps help our brains.

๐Ÿ—บ๐’๐ฉ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐š๐ฅ ๐“๐ก๐ข๐ง๐ค๐ข๐ง๐
Paper map require visualization of where things are located and where you are in respect to them. This causes you to subconsciously gather information about your surroundings. Then your brain makes connections between the two. According to National Geographic
In addition spatial thinking has been linked to greater success in math, science, geography and navigation.

๐Ÿ—บ๐’๐ฒ๐ฆ๐›๐จ๐ฅ๐ข๐œ ๐“๐ก๐ข๐ง๐ค๐ข๐ง๐
Maps are filled with symbols, roads, rivers, trails, direction etc. This requires the brain to recognize symbols in relation to the bigger picture. Symbolic thinking promotes reading and understanding which is a critical skill needed in many facets of education such as comprehension, math and navigation skills.

๐Ÿ—บ๐†๐ซ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐Œ๐จ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ ๐’๐ค๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฌ:
Reading a paper map requires you to navigate and follow a path. When you draw your route or trace it with your finger hand eye coordination is being developed. Then you need to actually physically navigate your route. By showing children how to do both they can grow their gross motor skills which have been shown to help in all areas of academic improvement.

๐Ÿ—บ๐ƒ๐ž๐ฌ๐ข๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐ฆ๐š๐ค๐ข๐ง๐
Decision making and consequences are crucial skills needed in all aspects of our lives. We all succeed or fail based on our decisions. Maps encourage these skills by making you look at all your options then choosing a route. You are then required to act on that decision. It is through this you get hands on knowledge of mistakes and consequence. Did you end up at your intended location? If not what happened? Then you learn from your mistake and how to correct it.

๐Ÿ—บ๐Œ๐ข๐ง๐๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ฅ๐ง๐ž๐ฌ๐ฌ
Paper maps provides opportunity to unplug and be present. Digital devices can cause time mismanagement and distraction. By unplugging and using a paper map you promote a distraction-less environment. One where you can really focus on the task at hand. By not relying on digital means you have the opportunity to focus and connect with the world around you.

๐Ÿ—บ ๐„๐ฑ๐ฉ๐ž๐ซ๐ข๐ž๐ง๐œ๐ž:
Albert Einstein said โž๐‘ป๐’‰๐’† ๐’๐’๐’๐’š ๐’”๐’๐’–๐’“๐’„๐’† ๐’๐’‡ ๐’Œ๐’๐’๐’˜๐’๐’†๐’…๐’ˆ๐’† ๐’Š๐’” ๐’†๐’™๐’‘๐’†๐’“๐’Š๐’†๐’๐’„๐’†โž Well guess what paper maps are REAL! They are tangible you can hold them, feel them, smell them. They show you real places that can be visited. By locating an area on a map then using the map to physically find it you create the opportunity to form a deeper connection. You get to not only see but to experience the communities, streets, landscapes etc. This all works to inform and develop a connection to a location.

How to ground yourself in uncertain times. In these modern times a lot of people are feeling lost. Not just physically but mentally. The word ๐‘ด๐’‚๐’‘๐’‘๐’‚ฬ„ฬ is an ancient Canaanite word of Semetic origins meaning cloth. The Semetic speaking Phoenicians brought this word with them to the Lebanon area 3000BC-ish. ๐‘ด๐’‚๐’‘๐’‘๐’‚ฬ„ฬ remained unchanged until the founding of Carthage around 550bc.

The Phoenician language slowly began to mold into the Punic language. Which developed out of the Phoenician language molding with other native languages of the area, mainly of the Berber branches. The Punic language dropped a p and added a table. The new word ๐‘ด๐’‚๐’‘๐’‚ฬ„ฬ (Table cloth).

Around this same time the Carthagens had a practice of drawing their military maps on table cloths, as paper was scarce. This practice was introduced to the Romans in 146 BCE when they defeated Carthage. Which is where we get the Romanized vulgar Latin word ๐’Ž๐’‚๐’‘๐’‘๐’‚ ๐’Ž๐’–๐’๐’…๐’Šฬ„ meaning napkin of the world.

As Vulgar Latin continued to regionally change it began to develop into the French language around the area of Northern Gaul. It is this change where we begin to see our word take on the more modern meaning. With French we finally see the shedding its table cloth past. The new ๐’Ž๐’‚๐’‘๐’‚๐’Ž๐’๐’๐’…๐’† meaning map of the world.

But Map still isnโ€™t done with its journey yet. In 1066 William the Conqueror led the Norman conquest of England. With him he brought the word ๐’Ž๐’‚๐’‘๐’‚๐’Ž๐’๐’๐’…๐’†. Around this time the old Germanic language which we refer to as Old English, was beginning to change. More and more Latin roots with Greek influences began to creep in and eventually formed Middle English. It is in Middle English where we see our closest relative ๐’Ž๐’‚๐’‘๐’‘๐’†๐’Ž๐’๐’–๐’๐’…๐’† (map of the world).

Maps really began to shine at this time. Over the years paper became more accessible and maps started to become more available. Suddenly the world was a much bigger place than originally thought. ๐‘ด๐’‚๐’‘๐’‘๐’†๐’Ž๐’๐’–๐’๐’…๐’† could no longer be considered world maps and finally the mounde (world) was dropped and we formed ๐’Ž๐’‚๐’‘๐’‘๐’† which was shortened to the Modern English word ๐’Ž๐’‚๐’‘.
