Crafton Hills College’s Fire Academy receives $1.8 million gift from San Manuel Band of Mission Indians
(YUCAIPA, Calif., Sept. 26, 2022) -- San Manuel Band of Mission Indians donated $1.8 million to Crafton Hills College’s (CHC) Fire Academy, the largest gift ever received by the CHC Foundation, to help the college achieve its mission of training a highly-qualified and diverse pool of recruits to serve the local area.
The donation comes at a time when updated industry standards have increased program costs to a point where cadets are expected to pay more out-of-pocket to complete the 18-week course.
“I have never seen in my entire time at Crafton a grant this large for a program like ours,” said Academy Chief Mike Alder. “It is a tremendous shot in the arm for the Academy and the cadets.”
Preparing the next generation of public safety servants is one of CHC’s critical priorities due to a severe regional shortage of trained professionals in the community. CHC has identified the high-cost students must bear to qualify for positions in emergency medical services (EMS) and firefighting as one of the reasons for this shortage. Each year, cadets struggle to meet the out-of-pocket costs for uniforms, equipment, supplies, testing, licensing, and certifications. CHC aims to recruit a diverse cadet pool for its fire science and paramedic programs. Still, low-income students often cannot afford the cost of participation, certification, and licensure.
To help mitigate this need, the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians has promised $1.8 million to the CHC Fire Academy, helping students with financial barriers access training at CHC’s Fire Academy. Their support will help CHC recruit a more diverse group of recruits into these programs and benefit local communities by providing the trained personnel needed to fill open positions.
“It has been an honor to partner with Crafton Hills on both financial support and recruitment,” said San Manuel Band of Mission Indians Vice-Chairman Johnny Hernandez Jr. “Every person should be able to follow their dreams regardless of their financial situation. The Tribe is excited to hear this may close the gap between diverse communities and access to following their dreams in firefighting.”
“One of the greatest assets we have as a college is the support of our community and partnerships with extraordinary organizations, such as the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians,” said Crafton Hills College President Dr. Kevin Horan. “We are humbled by their generosity and shared interest in building a talented and diverse first responder workforce.”
“We are grateful to the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians for their generous support of our local students,” said San Bernardino Community College District Chancellor Diana Rodriguez. “The Crafton Hills College Fire Academy opens doors to good-paying jobs for our graduates. This gift will help build a diverse workforce of firefighters who will combat California’s wildfires and keep our communities safe.”
Crafton’s Fire Academy is one of the premier fire academies in the Southern California region and is designed to meet requirements for Firefighter 1 and 2 certifications. Offered twice a year – once in the fall and again in the spring – the program tests cadets on leadership, communication, physical fitness, and what to expect in the field of fire service through hands-on training. About 30 cadets participate in the program each term.
College officials applied for the grant in December 2021 with support from the CHC Foundation, a nonprofit that looks to advance the educational, career, and personal successes of Roadrunners through engagement and learning.
Alder said San Manuel’s gift will support the academy’s efforts over the next five years.
“This grant opens up doors for those who are currently at a financial disadvantage to go through the program,” Alder said. “It has always been our goal to increase diversity not just in our program, but the service industry as a whole.”
“I was getting really concerned about the program because costs were going up. I kept asking myself, ‘What are we going to do? How are going to fix this?’ and then San Manuel comes to the rescue. I feel much better about the program’s future now and I couldn’t be happier.”

Happy Labor Day! This holiday was borne out if the 19th century labor movement, which fought for fair wages, safe working conditions, and reasonable hours, among other things. We all continue to benefit from their struggle, and today we honor all those whose labor contributes to our amazing communities, industries, and businesses - and especially those in education (although I am admittedly biased!).

So great to be able to share the fantastic students and program at San Bernardino Valley College!

It's BACK! Redlands Local History Class, 51st Anniversary - Fall 2022
The A.K. Smiley Public Library presents the 51st edition of its course in local history, with classes meeting for six consecutive Tuesday evenings beginning Sept. 27 through November 1, 2022.
Teachers are Larry Burgess, who began the class in 1971; Tom Atchley, who joined Burgess in teaching the class six years later; and Nathan Gonzales, who was added to the team in 2021.
The course will focus on Redlands and the San Bernardino Valley, with each of the presenters sharing their perspectives and knowledge of the history of Redlands and its heritage, according to a news release.
Classes meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 27, Oct. 4, 11, 18, 25, and Nov. 1 in the Assembly Room of the A.K. Smiley Public Library, 125 W. Vine St., Redlands, CA 92373.
Registration is $30 per person. The class is sponsored by the library’s Board of Trustees, and proceeds from the registration fees go to the Heritage Room Endowment Fund, which benefits the archives and special collections at the library.
The library’s Heritage Room, celebrating its 50th anniversary, houses documents, photographs, art, maps on paper and in digital format, movies, ephemera, pamphlets, objects, and oral histories from the town’s past.
The three teachers have extensive knowledge of local and regional history.
Burgess, director emeritus of the A.K. Smiley Public Library, was the library’s founding archivist and has written several books about Redlands and delivered hundreds of lectures about the town and its people, according to the news release.
Atchley taught four decades in Redlands public schools, the majority of that time teaching history at Redlands High School. He has led tours of historical sights and neighborhoods and written about Redlands, and he maintains a personal collection of thousands of photographs as well as manuscripts of Frank Brown, Redlands’ co-founder.
Gonzales came to the library’s Heritage Room in 1999 and has served as archivist since 2013. He delivers many talks and lectures about Redlands history and has written books about the city. He specializes in showing local history through the use of digitized historical photographs and film.
Space in the class is limited. For information or to register, email [email protected] or call 909-798-7565.

Congrats, Robert and Paul - and thank you for your service to the Board and our San Bernardino Community College District!

Though last night’s graduation was in celebration of Class 97’s hard work and success, they seized the moment to also celebrate and recognize a real MVP to our program, custodian Richard Lopez.
Richard was presented with a plaque in appreciation of his work and support and the class gift also bears a nod to him.
Crafton Hills College President Dr. Kevin Horan was in attendance and stated “This evening I also bore witness to a first in my career” as he watched the students honor Mr. Lopez.
President Horan went on to say “Richard embodies what it means to support students. He goes above and beyond, and he genuinely cares about the students he sees and supports day in/day out. I am incredibly grateful and proud of Class #97 for their recognition of Richard's outstanding work in supporting students at Crafton Hills College.”
This tribute also caught the attention of Crafton Administration, members of the Board of Trustees, and SBCCD Chancellor Diana Rodriguez; whom echoed their appreciation of Mr. Lopez and his dedication to students.
Way to go, 97! And thank you , Richard! !!!
