Not all highway rescues involve vehicles 🧡🐾
While conducting pavement reviews on U.S. 395 in Modoc County earlier this month, several Caltrans District 2 maintenance employees spotted something unexpected along the highway -- a group of lost puppies.
The crew safely rescued the puppies and were able to return them to their family.
This is just one example of how our maintenance personnel are always looking out for more than just the roadway. Every day, our crews keep watch for hazards such as debris, disabled vehicles, collisions, and anything else that could impact the safety of the traveling public. Sometime, that means helping four-legged travelers who need a little extra assistance too.
Thank you to these employees for going above and beyond to make a difference -- for motorists, our communities, and in this case, some very grateful puppies. 🐕🦺🧡

THROWBACK THURSDAY: Did you know the Whiskey Creek Bridge was built as part of a major State Route 299 relocation project tied to the construction of Whiskeytown Dam in the early 1960s?
More than 60 years ago, engineers redesigned this corridor to accommodate a changing landscape and future transportation needs. Today, that same vision is continuing through the Whiskey Creek Bridge Replacement Project.
One of the most remarkable parts of the project is that the original bridge's abutments and piers were designed with future expansion in mind—and they will now be incorporated into the new bridge, more than six decades later.
Take a step back in time with these historic construction photos and learn how the bridge's past is helping shape its future.
