Not present like your phone is face down.
Present like your mind is actually there - in the conversation, at the dinner table, with the people you love most.

I used to think I was present because I showed up. I was physically there.

The hard truth is that most of us are physically somewhere and mentally everywhere else.

At dinner but replaying a work conversation.
With our kids but half-composing tomorrow’s to-do list.
In bed exhausted but wide awake, brain still running at full speed.

This is not a discipline problem. This is not a time management problem. This is a nervous system problem.

When your brain is stuck in chronic stress mode, it literally cannot downshift.

The part of your brain responsible for presence, connection, and emotional regulation gets hijacked by the part that’s always scanning for the next threat. You’re not distracted because you lack willpower.

I’m Jen.

For nearly a decade, I worked in cybersecurity sales while studying why humans think, behave, and perform the way they do.

On paper, life looked great.
Behind the scenes, my body was telling a different story.

Stress rashes. Blue fingers. Eventually, I lost my voice for 8 months.

I learned the hard way that success doesn’t mean much if you don’t have the health, energy, and presence to enjoy it.

That experience sent me down a rabbit hole of brain health, nervous system regulation, behavior change, longevity, and sustainable performance.

Today, I help ambitious people stop running on empty and start building the habits that support:

I was burntout so I did what everyone tells you to do:
✔️ Get a massage
✔️ Take a bubble bath
✔️ Buy the fancy journal
✔️ Practice gratitude

And while those things helped in the moment, the feeling never lasted.

I’d leave a massage feeling relaxed... then open my inbox and feel my shoulders tense right back up.

That’s when I realized:
The goal isn’t to escape stress.
The goal is to build a life that helps you recover from it.
For me, that meant less focus on occasional self-care and more focus on daily habits:
🧠 Breathwork
🧠 Better boundaries
🧠 Less stimulation
🧠 More intentional recovery
🧠 Protecting my energy like it mattered

Because it does.

Today, I help my clients stop relying on temporary fixes and build sustainable energy, focus, and stress resilience through small, neuroscience-backed shifts that actually stick.

Julie Freeman is a licensed integrative nutritionist and certified functional medicine provider with over 45 years of experience in nutrition, counseling, genomics, and energy medicine. She is certified in Mind-Body Medicine, Yoga, and Reiki and incorporates microdosing education and alternative healing modalities into her practice. Julie has authored three cookbooks focused on balanced, low-glycemic meals and her fourth book, Sunflowers, Sapphires and Seraphim, is her personal story of transformation and hope.

Here’s what I’ve learned through volunteering with Lighthouse and Make-A-Wish: families fighting childhood cancer rarely get quality time together.

They’re consumed by medical bills, hospital stays, and a kind of exhaustion most of us will never understand.
