Trip Leaders! We're offering a 2-day WFR re-cert in Cortland, NY this fall. It will recertify WMI, NOLS, SOLO, and WMA Wilderness First Responders. This is a NOLS Wilderness Medicine (formerly WMI) class, which means that it is high quality instruction, with experienced teachers who keep class entertaining and hands-on. AVS 101 - Fundamentals of Backcountry Living offers students a unique opportunity to experience course content in the real world during a 4 day backpacking trip in the Adirondacks.

This course is designed to immerse students in the fundamental skills and knowledge necessary for professional preparation as outdoor and adventure leaders.

This Spring, we’re offering Snowboarding I and Snowboarding II! Get outside and enjoy our NY winters.

PED 144 - Snowboarding I
Tues/Thurs 3-4:50 -
A technical skills and knowledge development course for beginner to intermediate snowboarders. This course will focus on the fundamentals of snowboarding and mountain safety.

PED 154 - Snowboarding II
Fridays 10:10-1:50
An advanced skills and knowledge development course for intermediate to expert snowboarders, students will be introduced to the foundations of snowboard instruction. This course will expand upon PED 144 and will focus on the technical aspects and tactical concepts of intermediate to advanced snowboarding.

PED 152 - Challenge Course I
This course is an introduction to group initiatives and high and low elements on the Challenge Course. Emphasis will be placed on fostering personal and group development, teamwork, leadership, communication and problem-solving skills by reaching beyond perceived limitations.

There are still some spots available in PED152 which takes place during the second half of the Spring 2022 semester.

Skiing II students have the opportunity to earn certification through PSIA-AASI to become a certified ski instructor.

PSIA-AASI’s certification process helps you:

-Become a better teacher
-Improve your skiing and riding
-Learn skills for moderating groups, public speaking, problem solving, and coaching

This certification can help students turn their love of skiing into a job. PED174 - Skiing II meets at Gore Mountain Fridays during the first half of the Spring 2022 semester. There is still space available to register.

AVS 224 - Fundamentals of Backcountry Skiing is open for registration for the Spring 2022 semester.

This course encompasses instruction in Cross Country, Telemark, and Backcountry Skiing. Students will learn basic ski mountaineering skills, advance skiing skills in off-piste and back country terrain, navigation and route selection, uphill techniques, avalanche theory and skills, and risk management strategies.

Join us this spring for AVS231 - Challenge Course Management. Registration is now open the Spring 2022 semester.

Students gain a comprehensive study of the skills and knowledge necessary to manage a challenge course. This course will focus primarily on safety and risk management, site inspection, rescue, equipment maintenance, accident and incident analysis and documentation. Emphasis will be on the challenge course installation, inspection, operational, and ethical standards identified by the Association for Challenge Course Technology.

This fall we’re offering AVS 265 - Rock Climbing Guiding and Instruction. Designed to provide students with the technical, instructional, management, and operations skills necessary for a position of leadership in the rock climbing industry.

Students will focus on technical rock climbing and instruction skills, customer service, industry and state standards/regulations, risk mitigation and safety management, incident/accident management, and review technical and rescue skills. Students can obtain Professional Climbing Instructors Association: Climbing Wall Instructor and Single Pitch Instructor Certifications through this course.
